Grant and Patent Administrator - Biotech

The Opportunity:

The role of Grants and Patent Administrator is to take an active role in the development of a cost – effective patent portfolio that is designed to maximise the chances of funding their product development strategy via grant funding.  This is a newly created role to formalise a process that was managed by several individuals in the company previously. However, due to their expansion and volume of new ideas, they need a Grants and Patents Administrator to take control and manage this process.

Due to the influence of this role, you will also be part of grant project review meetings and liaising with external grant bodies, liaising with legal advisors third party project collaborators and relevant project managers with the purpose to help develop the strategy so that opportunities continue to be realised, as well as the status of current projects and how to progress them further. 

An overview of the responsibilities includes the identification of opportunities for new patent and grant applications, the drafting and filing applications for grants, patents, trademarks etc. so that this is completed in a timely manner and effectively.  The role also encompasses drafting and filing of applications, art searching, renewal management and database maintenance.

The company, which is based on a Science Park just South of Oxford, is at the cutting edge of the exciting field of synthetic biology.  They have developed their unique technology which enables them to offer solutions to the discovery, development and manufacture of cell & gene therapies.  They currently offer a range of custom services, specialising in the design of DNA, optimisation of protein and viral expression systems, and cell line development technologies.  They are going through a significant period of expansion based on the success of their services and technology, not just in the UK but also in the US where they have recently opened a new office.

Desired Skills and Experience:

You will need to have experience of working in a similar role, preferably within the Biotech/Life Sciences/Pharmaceutical industry, with experience of identifying new patent and grant applications as well as drafting and filing applications for grants, patents, trademarks etc. with the ability to maintain databases and the management of patent renewals and the ability to work with external partners such as legal advisors and grant bodies.  Preferably you will be educated to degree level in a relevant subject with experience of working in a commercial or academic position with similar responsibilities.
