Funeral Consultant/Director

We're a family-run funeral company established in the 1950s giving the same care and advice as for friends. We're based in Havering and Redbridge with a quartet of four heritage funeral homes. We need someone to join our close-knit team of around 20 local people to share our ethos of giving our service to all bereaved families in our communities with love and integrity, heart and soul.

This extremely varied job requires someone with a "can-do" outlook. No funeral company experience is needed, but after training we would expect you to be able to look after any of our funeral homes competently, often alone, and also to be able to join the operations team on any of their tasks including helping to carry a coffin on a funeral. You'd also be joining our 24/7 on-call team, being available several nights a week. Eventually in time we would expect the successful candidate to be able to manage their own funeral home, conduct funerals and take qualifications. Plus we are long-standing participants in many neighbourhood events, running children's activity stalls, joining in charity fundraising, running our own community education days and promoting awareness and transparency of our services. You will get a true sense of doing a worthwhile job in the position of helping families at their time of need, giving peace of mind to people who wish to arrange and pay for their funeral plan in advance, and give advice about headstones, urns, commemorative jewellery and other items of importance to the recently bereaved. There is also a spiritual element to our work where we work closely with our local faith organisations to provide comfort, and we also help organise memorial events for those of any faith and none.

The ideal successful candidate joining our team is female or male, a driver with a car and clean driving licence, height between 5'6" and 5'11," lives very locally in Redbridge, Havering or surrounding areas, has good spoken and written English including clear printed handwriting, good basic maths, is well groomed and presented, with face to face customer experience and good people skills for sensitive conversations. Someone from a care, nursing or paramedic background is often well suited, having to be physically fit and be able to manual handle as part of a team, able to complete paperwork efficiently.

During training the salary is £21K pa pro rata plus on-call, then after probation rising to £10.55 an hour plus on-call, bonuses and commissions with expected earnings of around £27-32K+ including benefits. Working hours are minimum 45 a week or 9 hours a day spread over Mondays-Saturdays plus on-call, based in Havering and Redbridge. 28 days holiday a year including public holiday allowance. If you have previously worked in a funeral company especially any of the larger organisations, please note that we are unlike all others, having very high standards which you may not be used to.
