ISIS is a world-leading source of pulsed neutrons and muons located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, near Oxford. The facility performs cutting edge research into the structure and properties of materials at an atomic and molecular level.

About the role

As part of ISIS Design Division Electrical (IDDE) Safety Systems team, you will be responsible for the design and delivery of bespoke of optimized interlock systems protecting against hazards including ionizing radiation, machinery, high voltage and lasers.

You will be working on the assessment of existing equipment and systems, modification of operational systems as well as clean sheet designs to meet customer specifications and both internal and relevant published standards. You will work to structured project management techniques encompassing the full lifecycle i.e. concept, detail design, procurement, manufacture, installation, commissioning, operation and eventually decommissioning, providing top level electrical engineering expertise to ISIS.

Key duties:

  • Generation of bespoke safety system solutions, providing optimized designs to specification
  • Participation in all safety lifecycle activities, including risk assessment and evaluation, specification, verification and validation
  • Production of technical designs, documentation and prototypes for review
  • Management of tendering, procurement and delivery of approved designs

About you

You will have a background in an appropriate engineering discipline and experience in the implementation of control systems. You should display a keen interest in the development of control systems to provide safe working environments.

You should be able to demonstrate experience in an electrical design environment on technically complex projects, producing high quality electrical design solutions to meet demanding technical and scientific requirements. Experience of AutoCAD and being fully conversant with electrical circuit diagrams is essential, including knowledge of British and European electrical design and safety standards.

You will be proactive and enthusiastic, and will input into all safety lifecycle activities, including hazard identification and analysis to ISO 12100:2010, generation of safety specification documentation, development and practical implementation of PLC and/or relay based interlock systems and verification and validation.

Experience in the development of IEC 61508 / 61511 / BS EN 13849 functional safety systems and laser interlock systems at high hazard facilities in the process or machinery sectors and control panel design to IEC 60204-1:2018 will be beneficial.

Good written and oral communication skills with a systematic, methodical and organized approach to work. Good team working skills are essential with a focus on delivering high quality solutions to specification.
