How the role fits in

First Utility is a large (turnover approaching £1bn) complex business with multiple revenue streams. The Finance Department works with every other department within First Utility on a daily basis. Recording "where we have been", reporting "how we are performing" and helping to plan "where we are going" all in a profitable, sustainable and controlled way.

This role reports into the Head of Commercial Finance and manages one direct report. You will be responsible for managing the budgeting and rolling forecast process for the UK business and also manage the group cash forecast and treasury function.

You will be engaging with all the other areas of Finance and the Senior Leadership team in the Commercial and Operational functions. Leading on providing the plan for "where we are going ". Given the nature of our retail business and scale of change in the industry, we are moving at a fast pace to pioneer new ideas for our customers, so we update our plans on a frequent basis too.

The role day to day

The Budget / Rolling Forecast Process

  • Lead the overall Budget and rolling forecast process for the UK Business, preparing the budget timetable and agreeing the budget scope with the Finance Leadership team

  • Communicate and manage the delivery of the budget with senior stakeholders. Co-ordinating the process across each of the business functions. Regularly reviewing progress and continuously making improvements to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the process.

  • Collate all of the relevant budget / forecast input assumptions from each function and the Finance Business partners supporting those functions. Provide the right balance of challenge and risk awareness to enable the budget to be a credible Financial representation of the business strategy.

  • Prepare supporting information which clearly articulates the comparable movements in customer volume, revenue and cost rate changes and productivity improvements.

  • Prepare and present budget or forecast presentations for review by the Senior Leadership team - interpreting complex financial data for non-finance professionals. Presentations should be able to clearly articulate how the Financial plans reflect the operational business strategy and the values of risks or opportunities associated with the plans.

  • Maintain the view of Risks and Opportunities and ensure that these are operationally owned and updated at the right times to drive business actions.

  • Support the customer profitability model. Use the data in the forecasting tool to create new insight for the business and identify potential opportunities to improve customer value and operational performance.

  • Build strong relationships with the Business, Finance Business Partners and Reporting teams to continually improve accuracy of the financial forecast, linking the forecast to operational KPIs so that the business can better understand the impact of its decisions

  • Ensure the business is operating to its Financial Covenants, regularly reporting the position to the Exec and advising on the impact of operational decisions

Cash Forecasting

  • Supervise the work of the Treasury Analyst, coaching and developing whilst maintaining a high degree of accuracy

  • Review the weekly drawdown of cash (and the daily cash forecast) to meet payment requirements for the week ahead

  • Maintain a short, medium and long term focus on the cash position, ensuring we meet our commitments

What you'll need to help make the best of the role

  • You will be a Qualified Accountant with several years post qualification experience

  • Experience leading FP&A activity in a large scale complex and dynamic business

  • Have an attention to detail that improves forecast integrity, balanced with the ability to see the financial plan in total to be able to articulate the business strategy

  • Team leadership and coaching experience to help the Finance team to work at its best

  • Enjoy the challenge of working in a customer focused, fast paced and growing business

  • Confidence in building relationships and communicating with diverse stakeholders at all levels

The 'nice to haves'

  • Experience within a senior finance role in a UK Energy business

  • A working knowledge of using Adaptive Insights

  • Project or programme management experience
