Food Technical Manager

We are looking for an outgoing, tenacious and scientifically curious technologist to join our growing team of Food Technical Professionals. This time we are looking for someone who will get a buzz from Pret Coffee and enjoys soup and hot food.

The role is Technical with a strong emphasis on operational implementation. There is the opportunity for complex project management, plenty of new product development, and policy ownership. If these tick your boxes then apply - you could be the very person we are after.

Ideally you will have a retail, food service, or branded supply chain background – though experience of visiting manufacturers and a food degree is the real key. So what will we ask you to do?

You’re here to ensure that all our Pret hot food and Barista prepared drinks comply with the mission statement, the law and food safety requirements through establishing, maintaining, reviewing and continuously improving all systems, processes and standards required for food safety and due diligence. We need you to manage our supply base dealing with quality and supply chain challenges to manage and maintain the quality of inbound ingredients for Pret shops. We will also expect you to build strong ties with key roles in our shops to land future projects robustly.

Scope of Role

This role focuses on managing part of our food supply base, our bought in products and ingredients, developing real expertise and knowledge for Pret. It requires not only a high level of knowledge of food technology but also a clear understanding of the Pret mission statement to ensure that all products meet the standards.

The role will be required to implement the Pret Technical Strategy, taking responsibility for its adaptation, and supporting it’s delivery across all current, and future markets. Assisting colleagues in the UK, Partnerships and overseas.

Core Responsibilities


  • To implement the Pret Quality Manual

  • To advise and recommend on key policy/process areas such as Allergens and Quality attribute sheets

Product Management

  • To ensure that all your ingredients have up to date specifications which are easily accessible.

  • To manage shelf life, ensuring the freshest ingredients in our shops

  • To interpret external information for the Head of Food Technical so that the business can comply with relevant guidelines.

Supplier Management

  • To review the type and amount of foreign bodies received in the business and oversee any reduction programmes put into place.

  • To ensure Quality Improvement Programmes are in place with suppliers.

  • To champion quality improvements and drive them forward


  • To support customer services and marketing teams with foreign body, nutritional and other customer queries.

  • To support shops on queries regarding shelf life, quality, nutritional information and allergens.

  • To ensure that your food related printed material in the company is factually correct and meets legal guidelines.

Desired Skills and Experience
  • Food Technology qualification at degree level

  • In depth knowledge of ingredient procurement, new product development or supplier management
