Financial Controller / Company Secretary

Our client in the Alternative Finance sector offer short term commercial loans and other working capital solutions to SMEs across the UK. They are looking for a Financial Controller who will also act as Company Secretary and form an integral part of their Finance and Management teams.

The Financial Controller is a key member of the Company’s management and finance teams and is responsible for providing financial oversight and support across the business.

Reporting to the CEO and working with other managers and Board members, they will maintain control of the Company’s financial reporting, books and cashflow to help provide accurate and timely reporting for all stakeholders whilst ensuring appropriate financial controls and procedures are in place across the business.

As Company Secretary, the role involves administration of the Board activities and active involvement with all of the Directors.

Key Responsibilities to include:

  • Manage the day-to-day running of the finance department ensuring smooth running of Company book-keeping, processing of invoices, expenses, supplier payments and other company transactions
  • Manage the finance department including the Financial Analyst including setting annual objectives and monthly 1:1 reviews
  • Ensure smooth running of routine bank transaction downloads and allocation of transaction type
  • Ensure appropriate allocation of payment and receipts within the access database
  • Ensure appropriate allocation of receipts / calculation of return of client funds
  • Ownership of preparing monthly financial reports, KPIs and analysis
  • Ensure timely and appropriate processing of Sage financial transactions
  • Ensure timely and appropriate client account reconciliations
  • Ensure timely and appropriate debtor and general control account reconciliations
  • Administration of the Loan Note Holders/Shareholders information, including the database, loan amounts, certificates and related paperwork.
  • Oversee and ensure timely production of the company’s monthly and quarterly payments and backup information including: R185, CT61, HMRC (PAYE, NI etc), Accounts Payable inc expenses
  • Ongoing development and maintenance of financial process, financial control, and maintenance of financial documents
  • Take ownership of the preparation and maintenance of the cash flow information and forecasts
  • Improvement and development of management information and reporting as and when required
  • Work alongside the Executive Management Team to prepare the annual budget
  • Prepare for the annual audit and take ownership of the audit process with the auditors
  • Responsibility for the Company’s payroll
  • HR related matters as and when required
  • Ensuring the business is compliant in all aspects of it’s business and providing timely and pertinent updates to the Board as required
  • Additional ad hoc finance requirements as and when they arrive
  • Provision of a high quality support service, namely reporting, to managers within the Company
  • Assist other teams on an ad hoc basis as and when required
  • Prepare and keep up to date Board records, documents and minutes
  • Monitor and work with Board members to ensure completion of responsibilities
  • Clear presentation of financial information to Board members and Shareholders

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years working in a finance function
  • Hands-on practical experience across all finance activities
  • Strong grasp of general finance principles
  • Strong IT / Software skills including Microsoft Office and SAGE
  • Confident manner, good interpersonal and communication skills
  • A team player, able to build relationships across the business
  • Demonstrable passion, integrity, creativity and energy
  • Appropriate accountancy qualification (ACA /ACCA /CIMA)

Preferable experience:

  • An understanding of the compliance and regulatory environment
  • Some experience of working in the Financial Services sector
