Kaplan International Pathways, a division of Kaplan Inc., offers life-changing study opportunities for international students from more than 100 countries around the world. Our university preparation programmes provide a blend of English language training, academic modules and study skills to ensure that students have the skills they need to progress to and excel on undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes at leading universities. We call these programmes 'Pathways’. We currently have 10 Pathways colleges in the UK, as well as numerous locations across the US, Australia and Asia Pacific. The Department

Based in our Head Office, the role will report to the Head of Financial Accounting and Reporting of Kaplan International Pathways Finance.

About the role

We are looking for someone who has a good grasp of accounting, who enjoys broad variety in their work and wants to extend their experience within the financial accounting team. The role will provide support to the Head of Financial Reporting and Accounting over month-end, with intercompany invoicing and accounting, bank reconciliations for our principal volume accounts as well as responsibility for other areas which may vary over time. Currently these include for example, fixed assets and depreciation and our student insurance accounting, with responsibility for related journals and monthly balance sheet reconciliations. As an employee of an American-owned company, you will also have exposure the Sarbanes -Oxley requirements, which require a rigorous control environment.

We are about to undergo systems changes, upgrading our general ledger and moving our sales ledger into our accounting system. These will bring the potential to make changes and streamline processes, such as automating the bank reconciliation. We are looking for someone who would enjoy the challenge of being involved in making system-driven improvements, and who is keen to look at how processes can be made more efficient, working alone or with colleagues in the Finance team, as appropriate.

  • Maintenance of the Fixed Asset Register, depreciation and capital reporting.
  • Intercompany invoicing, accounting and balance confirmation prior to month end close.

  • Assisting with the completion of other month-end accounting journals and reconciliations.
  • Maintaining finance controls within areas of responsibility.
  • Support the Finance Director and Head of Financial Accounting and Reporting Accountant during audits, providing information to internal and external auditors.

  • Support (as time permits) to the Audit and Compliance Manager in the production of statutory accounts
  • Involvement in system projects (extending Concur, our expense management system, automation of bank reconciliations, balance sheet reporting)
  • These responsibilities may vary over time and are not exhaustive.

About you

We are looking for a good team-player, who is also able to work autonomously and show initiative.

Due to the nature of the role, it is vital that the candidate is flexible with regards to hours around month-end to meet deadlines. The successful candidate should:

  • Be a technically-strong accountant, who is confident with double-entry book keeping.
  • Have substantial experience in an accounting role.
  • Be a critical-thinker, with high attention to detail, a good ability to self-review, and be able to work with accuracy when under pressure.
  • Have a pro-active approach to managing a diverse and time-constrained workload.
