Job Description

This position is required to provide strong leadership and direction to the farm in areas of crop cultivation and feed maintenance, purchasing, warehousing, health and well being of livestock, administration, milking, hygiene, maintenance, safety and environment. It is responsible for directing the overall activities of the farm to ensure that the Central Process Plant (CPP) receives uninterrupted supply of the superior quality milk at the lowest possible cost while maintaining corporate established quality standards. Additionally, the position is responsible for ensuring that all support activities related to the farm are carried out as per schedule

Main Tasks and Accountabilities

Strategic inputs to the CTO as a core team member

Estimate operational requirement to meet expected demand forecasted for raw milk

  • Milking herd / young stock requirements
  • Feed requirements
  • Manpower, machines, equipment and other technical support required
  • Delivering budgets, business plans and forecasts for farm operation

Farm strategy and execution plan

  • Create a farm management plan to provide for optimum size of milking herd to meet the raw milk requirement and plan for replacement stock (young stock or new purchases)
  • Define reporting requirements for animal health report and farm outages
  • Oversee creating of the farm manual
  • Develop a comprehensive farm management plan including livestock planning, feed requirements and resource planning and allocation
  • Anticipated bottlenecks and contingency planning
  • Ensure milk of the finest quality is presented for collection
  • Farm manual in place

Decision support system

  • Establish the requirement from Decision support system planning and maintaining its livestock with respect to nutrition and feeding, reproductive efficiency, heifer management and cow replacement, production and productivity environmental stewardship
  • Define farm related information outputs from the decision support system

Farm Walk

  • Conducting farm walks to assess the health and general well being of the cattle stock and the farm premise
  • Collect firsthand information about the farm and cattle stock

Feed budget and feedstock management

  • Ensuring cultivation / procurement of alfalfa in adequate quantities and properly storing in dry storeroom
  • Ensuring procurement of additional nutrients in adequate quantities and properly storing in dry storeroom
  • Establish feed budget
  • Ensure farm does not run out of feedstock; determine reorder stock level.
  • Ensure against spoilage of feed due to moisture/ insects/ rodents etc.

Animal Health and wellbeing

  • Ensure livestock is fed and housed appropriately, provided access to adequate drinking water
  • Define and implement good practices of animal health and welfare
  • Define farm protocol to ensure unwell animals are identified and treated quickly
  • Ensure animal health and wellbeing;
  • Ensure stock fatalities are minimized Oversee milk harvesting
  • Define procedures to ensure that all cows are milked appropriately; marked cows dealt with as per veterinarian’s instructions
  • Define standards/procedures for hygiene and cleanliness

Oversee Milk Harvesting

  • Ensure milk collection as per target (Quantity)
  • Ensure recording/monitoring and swift action on any instance that indicates possibility of milk contamination
  • Define procedures for cow milking, treating marked cows and ensuring hygiene
  • Contribute to dairy hygiene and achievement of milk quality

Livestock management

  • Define reporting and record keeping requirements for livestock including segregation into different groups, prescribed medication being administered and animal health report
  • Ensure efficient livestock

Health and Safety

  • Understand and ensure meeting the obligations of health and safety requirements of employment legislation. Ensure compliance of all H&S policies related to farms, including wearing of helmets and other personal protective equipment by the staff
  • Identify and contain/minimize health hazards among livestock and raw milk produced
  • Maintain an event register including an accident summary report (any accident or near miss accident, injury or non-injury, possible hazards
  • Comply with health and safety requirements of employment legislation
  • Comply with health and safety policies and procedures
  • Document and report all instances of illness outage/ raw milk spoilage

Requirements for the role of Farm Manager

  • Minimum of a Masters Degree in Agriculture with specialization in dairy farm management
  • Level 4 Certificate in Agriculture preferred

Professional Qualifications

  • Must have special training in livestock management and artificial insemination
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Experience

  • Overall experience of 15 years or more with 8+ years in managing dairy farms.
  • Strong understanding of the Middle East culture
