Our client, based in Basildon, are looking for an experienced groundsman / gardener to maintain and oversee a large private estate, comprising of approximately 100 acres of land, including the upkeep of two formal gardens; an orchard; greenhouses, associated out buildings and a small lake.

This is a physically demanding role, the successful applicant will be operating heavy equipment, working outdoors in all weather conditions and the work is physically demanding. As well a good understanding of health and safety you will also need to have a driving licence. This is a full time permanent position reporting to the Estate Manager. You will be part of a small team of groundsman/gardeners.

Maintenance and improvement of newly created and original gardens, including:

• Grass cutting
• Weeding
• Pruning fruit trees and roses
• Trimming hedges and topiary
• Sourcing and planting bedding plants within agreed budget
• Growing plants from seed and cuttings for planting throughout the estate
• Growing and harvesting produce within the greenhouses and kitchen garden for consumption by the estate residents/workers
• Clearance of all leaves and other autumn/winter debris
• Composting of all relevant material
• Management of irrigation system
• Watering non-automated sections
• Maintenance of all hardscape areas in a clean condition, by sweeping/pressure washing as required
• Ensuring all lighting is working effectively, engaging professional advice as necessary
• Maintenance of water features, keeping clean and free from debris
• Commissioning and managing specialists, experts, or contractors, as approved by the Head of Operations
• Other tasks as assigned

Ground Area:
Maintenance of established hedgerows and parkland, including:
• Operation of tractor mounted equipment
• Operation of ‘sit and ride’ mowing equipment
• Biennial hedge cutting
• Infill hedge planting
• Supervision of established trees to identify ‘dead, dying and diseased’ for arboricultural management, as required
• Regular watering of newly planted Lime Tree Avenue in the growing season
• Clearance of all autumn/winter debris
• Maintenance of fountains
• Cleaning of gutters and pipework
• Maintenance and upkeep of gates

Maintain and oversee main house and outbuildings, including:
• Overseeing security arrangements, seeking professional assistance as necessary.
• Maintenance of swimming pool (yet to be constructed)
• Maintain and upkeep greenhouses
• Coordinate and manage all remedial and repair activity
• Complete minor maintenance tasks as required
• Oversee decorating of interior & exterior as required

Maintenance and overview of all company premises, including hard and soft landscaping. Undertaking repair and upkeep as and when necessary.

Equipment:
Maintenance of all equipment and tools on the estate, including:
• Routine maintenance of all tools and equipment, ensuring regular servicing and repair, where required
• Identifying equipment ‘gaps’ to improve efficiency and recommending appropriate sourcing options.

Driving
• Driving duties as and when required

Additional Duties
• Execute ‘Ad-Hoc’ requirements as necessary
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements
• Self-motivated person who can act on own initiative with minimal supervision and direction
• Ability to lead and manage all garden and grounds related activity
• Flexible
• Full, clean British Drivers Licence
• No criminal record

Competencies
• Knowledgeable and experienced practical gardener
• Qualifications desirable (relevant NVQ)
• Good interpersonal skills
• Good time manager, capable of developing and working to a well ordered plan
• Capable of basic general equipment maintenance
• Highly trustworthy
