We’re looking for an educational professional with experience of international English Language to take on the dual role of Lead Assessment Writer and Lead Examiner for the OxfordAQA International GCSE English as a Second Language specification.

These are great roles for education professionals with expert knowledge of English language who are looking for a development opportunity. The roles are primarily home-based, however, you’ll be required to attend meetings in Guildford, London and/or Manchester (meetings will be held virtually whilst current restrictions are in place).

Lead Assessment Writer

The successful applicant will be responsible for creating questions, compiling papers, mark schemes and assessment objective grids which reflect the requirements of our GCSE ESOL specification. You’ll have the ability to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of good assessment practice.

  • Set quality exam papers, that offer valid, fair, reliable and robust assessment and adhere to the specification and regulatory requirements.

  • Develop clear and accurate mark schemes which support reliable marking.

  • Work collaboratively with AQA staff and associates, resolving issues where they arise.

  • Communicate appropriately, and listen and respond to requests for information and feedback within appropriate timescales.

  • Contribute to meetings to provide the required outcomes and a positive experience for attendees.

  • Work with others to continuously improve AQA processes.

  • Be open minded and responsive to new ways of working.

Lead Examiner

As ESOL Lead Examiner you will be responsible for leading and supporting a team of examiners to accurately mark our 9280/L GCSE (International) English as a Second Language paper. Some of the key deliverables are:

  • Lead meetings (online or face-to-face) to communicate and embed a common and consistent application of the mark scheme.

  • Produce training and guidance to convey the marking standard.

  • Monitor examiners’ standards of marking to ensure consistent and accurate application.

  • Take any actions required to help ensure that all marking is completed by the specified deadlines.

  • Review evidence at the Awarding Committee and provide professional judgement based on this evidence to determine the grade boundaries.

  • Undertake post-results review of marking and support AQA with further post-results work as required.

What we are looking for

We’re looking for candidates with extensive experience in ESOL and who have the enthusiasm to lead, and contribute to the curriculum vision for this subject. In addition to:

  • Recent teaching experience of English as a Second Language or teaching English to international students.

  • Experience of question writing within an education-based environment.

  • Formal marking experience of GCSE or iGCSE English Language, ideally using an electronic marking platform.

  • Strong and confident leadership ability.

  • Able to work to tight deadlines whilst working on multiple projects.

  • Willing to absorb and act on constructive feedback from colleagues.

  • IT literate due to the use of e-technologies.

  • Previous experience in a senior examiner role is preferred.

  • A degree in English or related field is desirable.
