As an Environmental Health Officer within the Council's pollution team you will be tasked with investigating instances of land and water contamination across the Borough. An estimated 300,000 hectares of land in Great Britain are thought to have been affected to some degree by contamination left by industrial activity. The contamination may be caused by leaks and spillages from pipes or tanks, by the disposal of waste materials on-site or by the demolition of buildings containing toxic elements such as asbestos. You will conduct inspections in order to identify the pollutant which is contaminating the area and use your statutory powers in order to return the sites to a satisfactory state, protecting the health and safety of people in the vicinity and subsequently enabling the council to press ahead with vital regeneration schemes.
In order to be successful in this role you will have a degree in Environmental Health/Science and prior experience of working within similar capacity at either a Local Authority or County Council investigating and dealing with complex contaminated land issues. You will have an excellent understanding of the regulatory framework, guidance and in particular be fully conversant in both Parts 1 and 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
The Borough is well connected to other towns and cities, including London, by road and rail. You will receive an hourly rate of up to £35 per hour and a contract that is initially expected to run for 6 months.
