Duty Manager - Leading Convenience Retailer: £15,000 - £20,000 plus fantastic progression!

Job Purpose:

To manage all aspects of the fresh food operation, (including all aspects of the fresh food operation where relevant). Delivery of excellent customer service and operational standards whilst achieving compliance with HSSE in conjunction with the Store Manager, in line with the company values of Safety, Respect, Excellence, Courage and One team.


Under the guidance of the Retail Store Manager:

  • Ensure that the store operates safely and legally in accordance with Company HSSE, Food Safety and Compliance policies and procedures
  • Where relevant, ensuring the M&S brand is protected at all times by ensuring 100% compliance with all due diligence processes such as stock rotation, out of date stock, red alerts/product restrictions
  • Contribute towards the financial performance of the store, through sales performance and effective controls
  • To implement as required all initiatives at store level
  • To run the store in the absence of the Store or Deputy Manager
  • Deliver excellent customer service using the methods available i.e. Fast Friendly, Available, Clean
  • To maximise product availability, optimising stock management and replenishment process
  • Maintaining book stock accuracy using pre-defined processes
  • To assist the Store Manager as required in utilising all Management Information available to enhance the stores performance in particular in relation to cash loss, dry stock loss and waste
  • To complete all store administration as required
  • To take receipt of deliveries and associated paperwork
  • Effective deployment of staff on shifts
  • Dealing with customer enquiries
  • Ensuring legal compliance throughout the store, including ticketing, food safety and Under Age Sales etc.
  • Stop any unsafe work or activities

Key measures

Under the guidance of the Retail Store Manager:

  • Customer - Mystery Customer, Store Operations Review, M&S Brand Standards Audit
  • Control & Compliance - Advanced Safety Audit’s completed, financial audit B or above, timely reporting of all HSSE incidents, HSSE and Food Safety Audit’s, Red Alert Compliance
  • Store Performance - Shop sales vs. plan, Overall store net income vs. plan, Fuel volume vs. plan, Waste management, Wage spend vs. plan, Cash loss vs. plan, Nectar issuance

  • Customers - Deliver excellent customer service through leading by example
  • Store Team - Provide a safe and happy environment for all, assist in the identification of future talent
  • Store Manager -Working as one team with management on all store matters, joint problem solving
  • Retail Territory Manager - To liaise with the Retail Territory Manager in the absence of the Store Manager
  • Specialists -Give feedback, jointly problem solve business specific issues, use expertise to find solutions
  • External Third Parties -Maintain positive relationships with all Third Parties, particularly M&S colleagues

Skills / Experience

  • Prior experience in a food retail environment or similar,
  • Previous supervisory experience (Internally, successful completion of Connections 1).
  • Demonstrates a passion for retail and customer service
  • Awareness of use of Management Information
  • Good planning & organisational skills
  • Demonstrated good communication skills
