Director of API Transformation Flexible location

The Director of API Transformation (DoAT) leads Group and Regional IT integration technology through transformation to all major business capabilities being exposed internally (and externally where applicable) as APIs.

Extensive experience introducing Micro services and developing new capabilities with Micro Services.
All transformation needs to come within an effective overall architecture.

The DoAT will deliver a transformed technology landscape that enables a more agile and cost effective business, able to respond quickly to new initiatives and changes within the competitive landscape.
The DoAT will be responsible for the successful transition to an API driven IT landscape, run any common platforms and run the API & Micro Services Centre of Excellence that advises and guides regional implementations.

The long term goal of the role is to make integration, cheap and easy, promote practical re-use, underpin and innovative, creative IT department that can easily find then easily and reliably consume and create high value services for creation of new business value.


What you will be doing

Work with Group and Regional and Business teams to analyse short, medium and long term benefits. Form strong and lasting relationships with senior execs to build a trustful engagement that emphasises the initiative’s benefits while making sure the plans focus on the business’ true priorities.

Work with Group and Regional Architecture, Engineering and Delivery leadership and teams to define policy, standards, guidelines, target architecture, design patterns and technology choices. Work with Group and Regional Architecture and Operations to define operational approach / tools and KPIs.

Build implementation plans and approach for short, medium and long term. Work with Procurement to identify and engage vendors. Work with HR to identify skill / training needs and organization. Work with Finance to cost plans and bring compelling business case to executive committees and boards. Manage and deliver to plans over the long term.

Lead the creation of common platform and the overall transformation to a Cloud business with greater agility and strong cost benefit structure. Build the team that will own the core platform and become the Centre of Excellence helping projects and functions gains the benefits of the new platform. Work with the other platform owners and senior architects to ensure the entire technology infrastructure works together and scales with the business.


What we are looking for

Essential Technical

•Experience at multi-national enterprise level / scale of adopting and heavily utilising one or more of; APIgee, Mashery, AWS API Gateway, Strongloop, 3Scale etc.
•Experience of adopting combinations of internal and external gateways as part of a cost effective migration strategy to cloud.
•Understanding of concepts like API catalogues or periodic tables. And, appreciation of need to document clearly for internal and external business use.
•Experience designing and implementing API solutions for 3rd parties.
•Experience and deep understanding of the cost models involved in cloud and on-prem API gateway solutions.
•Deep understanding of the complexities of data model design and interface design to provide a robust solution that can also evolve.
•Deep appreciation of micro-services design patterns and frameworks and how they can be practically utilised by projects.
•Wide and deep technical architecture experience with specific reference to implementing APIs and Micro-services very widely. Extensive enterprise and solution architecture experience also relevant.
•Ability to coach and direct teams of architects and engineers to be able to adopt new patterns and techniques in a non-disruptive way.
•Appreciation of the needs of projects to fold in new approaches without completely changing everything.
•Experience setting up and running technical centres of excellence.

Essential Leadership:
•Experience in senior technology leadership roles.
•Comfortable working with senior execs in C-Suite, communicating well and inspiring confidence.
•Proven ability to work collaboratively with IT and business functions to design and deploy appropriate technology solutions
•Ability to understand the complex business and political drivers of a Group and Regional business and influence the business and IT communities.
•Combination of technology, business acumen and delivery experience from technology strategy to in-life operation at scale
•Excellent vendor relationship management experience.
•Clear strategic thinker with the ability to think laterally and then translate this into proposals which are clearly communicated and easily understandable by business leaders and the technical community.
•Demonstrated experience of leading actual, virtual, matrix and global teams of technical architects and gaining strong credibility within the technical community
•A genuine interest in the effective use of technology to help manage and grow the TUI business and a desire to propose solutions which are bold and innovative
•Excellent verbal and written communications skills

Desirable:
•Bachelor Degree (Engineering or Science) in Computer Science / Engineering. Mathematics, Physics or a highly numerate computing oriented degree also relevant.
•MBA ideal to provide commercial understanding aspect of the role.
