Digital Marketing and Engagement Manager

An independent health organisation is looking to invest in a new hire to service the Communications Function of the Marketing, Communications and Engagements team. This will be in the form of a Digital Marketing and Engagement Manager 24 Month Contract Paying £50k. Reporting directly to the Senior Communications and Stakeholder Manager, you will manage and design our strategic approach to community engagement, including creating and delivering a digital and content strategy.


  • Design and oversee implementation of strategic approach to community engagement, including producing, managing delivery of and evaluating digital and content curation strategy, covering all aspects of digital communications.
  • Provide high quality digital communications and community engagement advice to senior staff, skilfully engaging and managing relationships with members and senior external stakeholders.
  • Ensure digital and community engagement activities are developed, making the most of available resources, including thinking creatively and prioritising effectively
  • Share expertise on effective online communities, championing the user experience and using knowledge of digital communications and trends in online communities to the online offer.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of mobilising knowledge and learning within the community and beyond and how that is disseminated through a variety of media.
  • Line manage the Community Manager, supporting them in delivery of their role and drawing their views and expertise into ongoing development and design of the website and digital channels.
  • Work with the Community Manager to increase engagement and active use of the website - which is critical to the long-term sustainability of the site and the way the community connects, shares and collaborates at a UK-wide level.
  • Ensure integration between online and offline community engagement activities.
  • Hold overall responsibility for the social media aspect. This will involve working with the Marketing and Communications Officer who manages the day-to-day activity and the Community Manager who facilitates community engagement social media activities.
  • Working with the wider team on bespoke digital projects, including an online collaboration space for grant giving, refining our approach to recruitment of members and capturing and promoting stories.
  • Accountability for the allocated budget for digital communications and community engagement.
  • Work with the wider team and specifically the Programme Manager, develop a robust approach to collating and managing data about people and activity to be used for evaluation, communication personalisation and general delivery.
  • Work with the Marketing and Communications Officer, be responsible for the monitoring and evaluation of the performance of email communications.
  • Accountability for the allocated budget for digital communications and community engagement.
  • Carry out appropriate user testing and quantitative research to ensure all digital products meet the needs of users.
  • Analyse quantitative and qualitative data with recommendations for improvement to maximise our digital impact.

Candidate skills and attributes:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop strong relationships, work at all levels in an organisation, get the best out of others and influence beyond line management boundaries.
  • Both an excellent verbal communicator and a highly accomplished writer and editor, with experience of writing and editing content for websites
  • Highly organised with proven excellent project management skills.
  • Proactive and motivated with excellent initiative and the ability to solve problems and adapt plans to accommodate changes in objectives, resourcing, timescales or budgets.
  • An interest in and understanding of health and social care.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in an evolving and sometime ambiguous environment.

To qualify for the role you must have:

  • Educated to degree level, or with equivalent professional experience
  • Significant experience of managing online communities and networks, and knowledge of trends and best practice in community management, as well as a sound understanding of how to effectively integrate both offline and online communities.
  • An understanding of web languages such as HTML, CSS or JavaScript (preferable).
  • Experience of developing impactful digital and social media strategies to achieve communications and organisational objectives that contribute to engagement within as well as the reputation of communities.
  • Experience of managing relationships with multiple agencies and commissioning high quality content for web, for example photography, data visualisation, video and digital long form.
  • Communications and influencing skills
  • Experience and understanding of evaluation techniques and synthesising, analysing and interpreting data (quantitative and qualitative) to make recommendations for improvements, including by undertaking user testing and using Google Analytics as well as equivalent tools for social media.
  • Experience in providing high quality training or coaching on various aspects of digital communications and explaining digital concepts to non-specialists.
