Job Description

We are currently recruiting for a Development Underwriter that will sit in our Commercial Risk Solutions part of the business within the Manchester Centre. This role will be focused on underwriting, building relationships, and developing new business opportunities across all Regional/Specialty products.

You will spend the majority of your time working with a panel of targeted brokers to identify and convert sales opportunities in order to support the achievement of the Centre's new business targets. You will use your relationship management and strong communication skills to work closely with the Centre Underwriting teams and Brokers to deliver financial results. You will be respected internally and externally for your underwriting knowledge, excellence technical skills, in addition to strong pitching of RSAs products and propositions.

This role will include frequent, local travel as the successful candidate will spend 50% of their time in the market, drumming up new business and pipelines for key brokers. The other 50% will be spent underwriting the new business they have brought in.


* Primary responsibility is to build and maintain relationships with targeted brokers - to understand their strategy, culture, personalities, customer base and decision making, and ensure they fully understand RSA's propositions
* Building a pipeline of proactive opportunities by broker, to ensure the New Business Team achieves results through a telephony channel
* Reviewing cases and delivering underwriting decisions by following agreed processes at the designated authority level and with the necessary senior direction and support, in order to secure profitable business within the agreed risk appetite
* Managing customer expectations and delivering brilliant whilst proactively identifying and pursuing up-selling and cross-selling opportunities at the same time as ensuring delivery of brilliant service
* Support retention of difficult/large cases and connections, to build momentum on winning more and ensure relationships maintain strong through the life cycle of the renewal
* Maintaining good internal relationships to support the end-to-end delivery of the customer proposition

The Individual

* Experience in underwriting Regions products (Motor, Commercial Combined)
* An ability to develop new and existing broker relationships
* Ideally experience in meeting brokers face to face
* Strong communication skills for both internal and external stakeholder and relationship management
* Experience in identifying broker needs and creating effective solutions while negotiating flexibly and appropriately
* Ideally this person would come from an underwriting background but with a sales mentality
