Design Engineer

Our client is a successful, progressive engineering company, based in Peterlee. Due to their continued growth, the company is currently looking to recruit a Design Engineer into a permanent full time position to produce clear and accurate designs in line with a product specification. The successful applicant’s contribution to the organisation will be the generation of new cost effective designs which will contribute to the company’s product portfolio. The individual’s responsibility will be for the generation of new products, and for ensuring long term product safety and reliability by contributing to validation and test programme development.

Job Description:

  • Attend handover meetings to get a full understanding of the scope of supply and the relevant standards applicable to a specific project
  • Ensure that it is clear how much design time is allowed for the project and the key project 'milestone’ dates e.g. design reviews, approval dates, client meetings etc.
  • Attend the 'kick-off’ meeting with the client and view site if necessary
  • All technical aspects of the project following an APQP procedure
  • Compile a list of all design activities relevant to a specific project and allocate resources and timescales in conjunction with the Design Manager and Project Manager
  • Organise and chair design review meetings
  • Prepare project specific health and safety documentation such as Risk Assessments
  • Ensure that all documentation and correspondence relevant to the project design is filed (electronically or as a hard copy) and that a Technical File is compiled from the beginning of the project
  • The Technical File must comply with CE and CDM requirements as appropriate
  • Produce clear and accurate designs in line with the project specification, budget constraints and associated standards - job specific and per legislation
  • Ensure that all drawings are checked prior to issue
  • To check other design engineers drawings prior to issue
  • To check that third party (independent) calculations conform to standards and the project contract
  • General arrangement drawings should exist for all designs, unless they are concepts, and must have a Bill of Materials referencing all item numbers and confirming quantities
  • Attend project review meetings as required
  • Generate detailed drawings for manufacture of all relevant components, including all requisite details such as materials, finishes and welds
  • Health and safety objectives must be satisfied at all times whether activities are taking place in the office, workshop or on site. Risk Assessments, Method Statements and Health and Safety Plans must be complied with at all times
  • Follow quality control objectives as laid out in the SCX Quality Manual. All relevant Procedures must be followed to ensure Customer Satisfaction and achievement of SCX objectives
  • Liaise with other departments and clients as required
  • Experienced beyond graduation within a manufacturing company or industrial design practice
  • To take individual responsibility for the generation of ideas to fulfil customer and business expectations with products which are suited to manufacture on-site
  • As a key member of a cross-functional team you will be expected to take the lead role in the early stages of the product’s APQP programme in order to produce accurate design and manufacturing data on time and on cost
  • To ensure long term product safety and reliability by contributing to validation and test programme development
  • To explore the advantages of using modern materials, processes and design techniques


  • Must have a degree in an Engineering discipline (typically mechanical, manufacturing or industrial design)
  • Must have at least 2 years’ experience in a similar Design Engineer role
  • Will have come from an engineering and/or manufacturing background with experience of modern manufacturing techniques and processes
  • Will have product and system knowledge
  • Will ideally have knowledge and experience of the automotive industry
  • Must have experience of using AutoCAD / Inventor / Solidworks 3D / Siemens NX / Catia V5
  • Must have experience of using 3D CAD (Ideally Solidworks)
  • Must have the ability to produce scoping calculations for sizing simple structures and mechanisms
  • Must have knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (ideally Cosmos) and ANSYS
  • Must have knowledge of Mathcad
  • Must have experience of working design projects within an APQP framework
  • Must have knowledge of DFM and FMEA and VAVE
  • Must have had experience of working with test engineers to develop validation techniques and programmes
  • Will have had direct customer interface
  • Good knowledge of mechanical assemblies and plastics with some electrical experience an advantage but not essential
  • Must be able to demonstrate engineering problem solving capabilities
  • Must be computer literate with a very good knowledge in the use of MS-Office, SAP and SRM
  • Must have very good English skills (oral and written)
  • Must have a full UK drivers licence
