Data Scientist

Posted 2 February by AutoTrader Ended

Data scientists at Autotrader are a bright bunch! They take volumes of data and analyse it to provide greater insight into our customers and business. They love thinking creatively and using data in different ways to uncover new and innovative ways of making the products we provide to our customers even better. It’s our aim to be the most admired digital company in the UK so we continually review and improve our products and develop new ones to stay ahead of the market. Data is absolutely key to our success as it creates opportunities for our sales and products squads allowing them to make informed decisions. It also enables decisions to be made regarding our strategic direction so you can see how important data science is to us.

Autotrader is the largest digital automotive marketplace in the UK with over 15 million monthly users carrying out over 159 million searches among over 475 000 new and used vehicles. This creates vast amounts of data every day. Understanding this data, and the opportunities it creates, is central to the future of our company.

We’re looking for a Data Scientist to support our Manufacturer and Agencies department, developing data solutions for automotive brands. Data Scientists at Autotrader are responsible for deeply analysing our data with the goal of formulating mathematical models of the underlying processes that explain the data. To illustrate the breadth of their work, team members have recently developed seasonal forecasting models, price optimisation algorithms and customer segmentation techniques. Some of our more ambitious projects involve collaborations with academia, and we also attend and present at mathematics and machine learning conferences and workshops. Data science underpins many of our most innovative products and will play an even greater role across the business as our capabilities grow.

As a key member of the team you’ll be focussing on some of our most important data-driven business opportunities. Capable of designing mathematical models and algorithms to explore and understand our data, you will also have the big data skills take the resulting algorithms from prototypes to fully productionised systems.

We would love to speak to candidates currently employed in a Senior or Principal Data Scientist role. You will be educated to PhD level in mathematics, statistics, computer science, theoretical physics, machine learning or other numerate subjects and want to apply your skills and experience to innovative commercial projects in digital marketing. We are interested in candidates with experience of developing and implementing machine learning, in particular behavioural classification and segmentation algorithms. Exposure to web analytics solutions such as Google Analytics, data visualisation tools and Data Management Platforms would be advantageous. In all cases, you should have a good knowledge of programming in languages such as R, SQL, Python and Java and experience working with large, real world data sets. This role can be based in Manchester or London and the successful candidate would split their time between the two offices.

However, it’s not just about the technical skills, people are a big part of this role too! You’ll be working with non-technical teams and it’s key that you’re able to communicate technical findings in a clear and simple way.

So are you the person we’re looking for? If so we’d love to hear from you. The salary banding for this role is between £55,000- £75,000 depending on experience. We offer a flexible benefits package with 25 days holiday (with the option to buy or sell days) and are located in awesome offices in central Manchester and London Kings Cross and there’s as much free tea, coffee and fresh fruit as you like!
