Greycoat Lumley’s client are seeking a couple to join them on their beautiful estate in the Scottish Borders. The Gardener will work full time hours and the Housekeeper part time. This is the main residence for the Principals but they are also away for long periods of time. There are two grown up children making up a family of four. The main property has eight bedrooms and a number of cottages on the estate used by members of staff. There are a number of Wwoofers who work in the gardens from March to October each year and the gardener will oversee their duties. The family are very welcoming and their current employees enjoy working for them.

Gardener Duties

The gardens are 40 acres and made up of - lawn, woodland, walled garden, an organic vegetable area, green house and a courtyard. The gardens are open to the public twice a year.

  • Maintaining the walled garden, gardens, trees and policies at the property

  • Pruning, fertilizing and carefully maintaining the plants and trees around the property

  • Mowing the lawns and cutting the rough grass

  • Clearing the drive, paved areas and courtyards of leaves and keeping the drives clear of moss

  • Clearing the gutters and accessible drains

  • Cutting and storing fallen timber, felling trees where directed, cutting logs and storing these in the log sheds, collecting kindling

  • Keeping the log sheds well-arranged and ensuring wood is available

  • Maintaining the outbuildings in good order and repair

  • Inspecting the roof of the main house and all outbuildings and cottages for slipped slates and arranging repair of the same where necessary

  • Ensuring the security of the main house and all outbuildings

  • Checking the central heating and electricity supply

  • Monitoring the arrival and departure of tradesmen and workmen employed to work in the main house

  • Planting and caring for new trees

  • Maintaining and mending fences, walls and ditches

  • Maintaining all machinery (i.e. mowers, strimmers etc.) and tools

  • Maintaining paint work as necessary

  • Driving of the Principals, family and friends

  • Any additional duties as may be advised to you by the Employer

Housekeeper Duties

In the absence of The Principals:

  • To attend to the general cleaning, upkeep and running of the main household

When The Principals are in residence:

  • To attend to all house cleaning

  • All ironing

  • All laundry

  • To assist, occasionally, with cooking and serving at both lunch and dinner parties.

  • Any additional duties as may be advised to you by the Employer

There are usually 3 dogs in the property (can increase to 5). The couple are responsible for the dogs’ wellbeing when the Principals are not in residence. Letting the dogs out in the morning, taking them for a walk, feeding the dogs, put the dogs to bed in the evening in the main house kitchen area.

There is use of a vehicle for work purposes only. Both candidates need to be able to drive due to the location of the property.

for Gardener: Normal hours of work are 40 hours per week Monday to Friday with a one hour lunch break. You will also be expected to work any additional hours as necessary.

For Housekeeper: Hours of work are 3 hours per dayMonday to Friday (15 hours per week) with a one hour lunch break as required. You will also be expected to work any additional hours as necessary.

Accommodation: Courtyard property with 2 large double bedrooms. Log burner in the living room. Plenty of storage and a lovely garden which is very private.

Council tax is paid by the Principal
