£30,000 to £35,000 per annum

The Cost Accountant is responsible for setting standard product costs across all categories. The role encompasses the entire business requiring close co-operation with the Buying, Operations, Logistics, Packaging and Sales teams. Costs are both historical – what was achieved? And forward-looking – What will the anticipated cost be next month/quarter/year? The role will also support the Management & Project Accountant in production of reports and management accounts, plus assisting in tendering for new contracts.

The Role
As the Cost Accountant your role will include the following responsibilities:

  • Working with teams across the business for the analysis and collection of costing data, such as production costs, transportation, operational labour, packaging etc. to compile an accurate standard cost for all product lines
  • Ensuring best practice and operational procedures adhered to in the business to enable accurate point of entry costing data
  • Analysing intake and operational costs and preparing reports comparing standard costs to actual costs, variance analysis
  • Standardising costing models across the business
  • Maintaining costing data within ERP system
  • Product, supplier and customer profitability modelling
  • Analysing changes in product specification, raw materials, operational methods and logistics to determine effects on cost and margin
  • Costing estimates for new and proposed products
  • Producing customer costing templates for new business tenders and contracts
  • Monitor PO accuracy, forecast cost v actual
  • Reconciliation of finished goods inventories and monitoring of physical count cycles.
  • Providing management with reports specifying and comparing factors affecting prices and profitability of products or services
  • Highlight and challenge poor performing lines/suppliers/customers
  • Developing overhead absorption models for full operational costing
  • Work closely with the IT team to develop and automate costing models
  • Be a part of the month end management accounting process
  • Support the M&P Accountant with commercial analysis
  • Promotional and marketing analysis
  • Undertake ad-hoc analysis and projects as required

The Candidate
The ideal candidate for the Cost Accountant role will portray the following skills and attributes:

  • Educated to degree level
  • Newly qualified accountant or 1 – 2 years PQE
  • Strong analytical and financial modelling skills
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • Ability to work with wider business and non-financial managers
  • Collaborative and flexible working approach
  • Advanced MS Office skills in particular Excel skills (VLOOKUP’s, pivots)
  • Experience of using accounting systems and BI tools
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Commercially astute with a flexible approach to the role
  • Fluent English – Both written & verbal.
  • Must live within a reasonable commuting distance to the site
  • Will need to travel to Atherstone site from time to time as required
