Commercial Manager

Our Cambridge based client is looking for an experienced Commercial Manager to join their busy and expanding team.

The role:

- To provide commercial support to Sector leaders and office partners to ensure appropriate decisions can be made to drive revenue and profit growth
- To regularly review the performance of Sectors, reporting to Sector leaders and assisting in communication as required.
- To identify business improvement opportunities, prepare the business case / feasibility reports and where appropriate assist in their implementation.
- Responsible for supporting the sector leaders
- In the preparation of a vision and annual business plan to increase the scale and profitability of the service line or sector identifying commercial opportunities which support sector and office growth plans.
- In preparing business cases for further investments (e.g lateral hires, partner promotions and partner conversions).
- To ensure that all new clients are properly engaged, with a fully scoped and costed engagement letter and the billing and payment arrangements agreed, and to assist with matter management where appropriate
- Providing financial information for the preparation of annual progress reports to the Board.
- Commenting to line managers on the performance of each partner in their service line at least once every 12 months and providing any necessary information.
- Deliver specific business improvement projects and, where appropriate, provide input and support to the various projects being undertaken in the firm. 
- Review and communication
- To meet monthly with sector leaders and review progress on growing revenue and profits in the context of achieving the business plan.
- To actively engage with the escalation process of WIP and debt issues, to identify areas of concern and monitor lockup exposure.
- Propose and agree the pricing strategy and agreed rate reviews with the respective sector leader for the sectors under your responsibility.
- To report quarterly to the NSL and sector leaders on recurring clients delivering a low profit and suggest strategies to improve profitability together with a gap analysis identifying opportunities to cross sell more services to existing clients.
- To make recommendations in relation to partner numbers and optimum structure and any recommendations regarding the make-up and structure of the legal support resources to the national service line.
- To provide finance and commercial mentoring to newly promoted partners, lateral hires and high potential fee earners.
- To assess the profitability of pricing arrangements for new clients.
- To identify the commercial education and training requirements
- Perform other work as necessary to assist in meeting firm objectives as delegated by the Senior Commercial Manager.


- Educated to degree level or equivalent in a business management discipline
- Previous experience in a business process / management role, preferably in a professional services environment
- Previous finance and budget management experience, including strong analytical and numeracy skills
- Well-developed business/commercial acumen
- Strong track record of building effective relationships at all levels and across departments and functions
- Strategic thinker, able to set the agenda, influence others and drive strategic change
- An ability to work on several tasks / projects at the same time
- Track record of delivering outstanding client service to internal clients
- Excellent IT skills
