Commercial Manager

We are working with a manufacturer of bespoke electronics such as switchgear, transformers, power packs and variable speed drives used in rail, oil & gas, mining and other heavy industries. They are looking for a Commercial Manager to support the external sales team and to drive the projects through from order to delivery, maintaining a control on costs and customer-driven changes to spec.

The Commercial Manager will attend customer meetings with sales people and get an understanding of their requirements. Then through liaising with the various internal functions put together an accurate bid. Due to the nature of the customer base changes will be requested during the design and manufacture of products and these must be costed to ensure accurate prices are charged to maintain company profitability. Terms of business, including payment terms will be the responsibility of the Commercial Manager. There are also two Proposals Engineers who may require a small amount of supervision but the role really is a hands-on operational role.

Throughout the build phase you will be a key point of contact with the external customer. Through clear communication with internal functions you will be able to inform customers of any delays or issues facing their project and work with them to devise a solution. Points of contact externally will include end-users (ie Network Rail), National Grid (or their representatives) and contractors/installers.

Some electrical engineering experience is preferred in order that you will understand some of the terminology the customers will use. Qualification in engineering would be desirable, either through a degree or apprenticeship.

We will be paying strong attention to personal attributes. This isn't a 9-5 job and whilst the company will not take advantage there will be occasions when you will need to put yourself out to get a job done for the customer. A willingness to learn and develop is essential. The skills and experience gained in this position will lend themselves towards General Management in the future (either within the company or elsewhere).

The company are based in Sheffield and they have a reputation for delivering quality products on time. The role will be office based but there will be requirement to visit customers and so a full driving licence is required. There will be use of a pool car but a company vehicle can be provided if you currently have one or you need to enhance your package to make a move. The current incumbent is leaving at the end of January so the requirement is immediate. Interviews can take place relatively quickly, although the business is closed from December 22nd to January 2nd.
