Commercial Finance Manager - Job Description

Summary of the Role’s Main Purpose:

Reporting directly to the Group CFO, in this wide ranging role you will apply strong commercial and financial acumen to on-going work streams (i.e. capital budgeting businesses cases) and ad hoc strategic/financial projects (i.e. acquisition assessments), where you will assimilate large amounts of information (both financial & non-financial), understand the key business and value drivers, and present concise & meaningful insight to an executive level (to allow effective and informed decision making).

This role provides significant exposure to the Group CEO, Group CFO and senior management team. Your work will be utilised to add value and influence the strategic direction of the Group.

Principle Accountabilities:

  • Assist in the development, and lead the critical review of capital budgeting business cases prepared by the business units prior to submission to senior management for review & approval; this will involve challenging the proposed business case, understanding the financial projections & key assumptions, ensuring that key risks (along with mitigating factors) are identified, and liaising with senior management regarding the business cases
  • Lead the post investment reviews of approved capital budgeting business cases on a periodic basis, in liaison with the relevant business unit; develop a best practice process for post investment reviews
  • Proactively monitor the group’s operating environment, communicating industry and

competitor developments (i.e. market intelligence) to senior management in a timely manner

  • Assist in the financial and commercial assessment of potential strategic opportunities (i.e. acquisitions), utilising prior end-to-end transaction experience (from initial opportunity assessment to acquisition completion) and a strong knowledge of corporate finance theory (including valuation)
  • Proactively monitor information releases from the parent company (including

presentations and SEC filings), communicating relevant insight to senior management in a timely manner

  • Lead the building, development and maintenance of the UK Group engineering plan financial forecast model, liaising with the business units and engineering team to obtain the appropriate assumptions; assist in the refinement of the forecast model, working with the business units to identify reasons for variations between actual results and forecasts; interpret and report on engineering plans outputs to senior management
  • Support the Strategic Planning Process, including with the critical review of business unit

submissions, and the drafting & finalisation of strategic plan presentations

  • Ad hoc strategic/financial analysis, research and decision support for the Group CEO and

Group CFO

Core Areas of Knowledge, Key Skills and Experience

  • Qualified Accountant (e.g. CIMA/ACCA/ACA/CA), with either a background from the Big 4 (corporate finance/transaction services/corporate recovery) or a large

multinational corporation

  • Very good networking and business partnering skills
  • Advanced skills with PowerPoint and Excel
  • Excellent forward planning and organisation skills (with some exposure to project


  • Proven track record of working independently; a confident self-starter
  • Initiative and ability to manage own time; responsive to tight deadlines
  • Ability to prioritise and respond accurately under pressure
  • Good levels of impact and influence
  • Ability to deal confidently with internal and external stakeholders (from senior management to operational & non-financial stakeholders), with strong oral and written communication skills (including report and memorandum writing)
