Clerical Officer/Usher

We are currently working with a public sector client based in Wakefield City Centre who are looking for a clerical officer to work in their office on a long term temporary contract.

The position is Full time Monday to Friday 37 hours per week. 

Overall purpose of role To offer support and basic advice to bereaved families and witnesses throughout the court proceedings and provide a clerical support to Coroner’s Officers.

Key outputs for role –

- Act as first point of contact after an inquest has been opened for families of bereaved and deal with their enquiries, in particular with reference to obtaining a death certificate.
- Obtain availability of family / witnesses to attend inquests, warning/cancellation of witnesses both verbally and in writing and brief bereaved families and witnesses in regards to Court procedures and the appropriate oath requirements.
- Prepare witness summonses and MG statements for Coroner’s Officers and produce standard letters regarding availability and dates of hearings for families and other interested parties, in order to facilitate the smooth running of the inquest procedure.
- Produce Jury summons and arrange attendance of Jurors at Court, checking eligibility. During the course of an inquest ensure the needs of the Jury are met in respect of refreshments, stationery, expense claims etc. Brief Jurors in respect of their duties including verdict deliberations etc.
- Responsible for directing people into Court and making proclamations to open and close proceedings and swear witnesses in at Court. Operate tape recording machines at Court and monitor tapes and keep a log of each witness for calculations of fees and expenses.
- Maintain an efficient and effective filing system with regard to files relating to inquests. Process and maintain accurate records in relation to listings for inquests.
- Provide clerical assistance in respect of the Coroner’s Court

Due to the content of information you will be exposed to in this position and public members you will have contact with you must be able to handle sensitive and delicate situations professionaly and with empathy.
