Chemical Product Manager - cleaning chemicals

Science Solutions Recruitment are currently recruiting for a Chemical Product Manager / Technical Manager for a cleaning chemicals manufacturing company, based on the outskirts South West London. This role will be a stand-alone management position, and does not include line management responsibilities.

Key responsibilities:

Chemical quality batch testing

Daily batch testing of chemical production samples to ensure conformity with standard specifications (colour, form, foam height, pH, solids content etc.) in accordance with BS EN ISO 9001 quality system. Batch testing required before product is released for filling and packaging.

New and existing product development

Formulation and re-formulation of products including chemical product performance, stability and quality tests. Conduct necessary tests on chemical products required by legislation.

Resolve chemical production problems and batch irregularities in accordance with QA quarantine and re-call systems. Completion of formulation Design & Development Forms (DDF's) and test reports. Evaluation and approval of new or substitute raw materials in conjunction with Purchase and Quality Manager. Arrange chemical samples for accreditation testing (Wool Safe, flash point and corrosion testing etc.)

Quality & EMS audits

Carry out quality system and environmental system audits and spot checks when required in conjunction with the Quality Manager and Compliance Manager.

External laboratory testing

Arrange to carry out where required by legislation, additional physio-chemical tests on the properties of our manufactured chemical products, e.g. viscosity measurement - kinematic viscosity for CLP and transport classifications and metal (steel and aluminium) corrosion tests etc.

Chemical quality product enquiries

Investigation of chemical product quality complaints and queries. Check chemical returns against batch sample and standard specifications. In collaboration with the Production Manager, establish and maintain systems to ensure products comply with Weights & Measures requirements.

Product labels

Update and layout text and artwork for chemical supply and carriage labels. Ensure chemical product labels comply with all legislation including CLP, detergent legislation and carriage regulations, etc. Liaise with label suppliers regarding the production and technical specification of labels. Place label order and proof check and approve label artwork from label printer. Produce in-house labels for lab and customer samples using Hibiscus Design Software.

Formulation updates and assemblies

In conjunction with the Managing Director and Purchase and Quality Manager, update formulations, maintain formulation archives, laminate production formulations and review and update chemical product stock assemblies. Keep up-to-date Datafile and packaging assemblies for chemical products.

Product specification sheets

Update chemical product specification sheets when required in accordance with any label changes. Maintain archive of product specification sheets and publish updated product specification sheets to staff accessible file area and the Company website.

Packaging design and performance

Liaise with suppliers with regard to bottles, caps, buckets, cartons and all other chemical product packaging. Ensure packaging meets carriage requirements including arranging UN certificate testing where necessary. Update carton artwork and design where necessary. Carry out in-house packaging performance tests where required.

Cleaning or treatment performance testing

Carry out performance testing of new or re-formulated products in conjunction with training department equipment and suitable substrate samples to be test cleaned or treated.

Technical calls chemicals / cleaning

Assist sales and training staff on calls concerning performance, suitability or characteristics of chemical products related to customer cleaning situations.

Chemical raw materials - research, specification and suitability

Liaise with raw material suppliers regarding technical and H&S Specifications of new and existing products. Testing of new and existing raw materials for suitability. Sourcing new and / or replacement raw materials and suppliers. Meet with suppliers to discuss existing products, new products, customer service, prices and supply issues.

Review of weekly chemical manufacturing schedule

Produce weekly manufacturing schedule in conjunction with Purchase and Quality manager and review manufacturing requirement to ensure minimum of two weeks stock at all times.

Daily operations - Chemical production department

To be the first point of reporting for the Chemical Production Manager and Production Supervisors in respect of chemical formulation matters relating to manufacturing and production process. Liaise and discuss daily production needs with Production Manager and Supervisors. Manage Production issues and implement change where needed. Monitor production processes in accordance with the QA system; oversee correct submission of manufacturing worksheets and raise awareness of errors or inaccuracies.

Knowledge and experience:

  • BSc (Hons) in Chemistry or similar
  • Previous and significant experience in a chemical manufacturing technical role
