Business Improvement Team Manager
Salary: £35-45k per annum
Our client has a very simple business imperative: their entire offer is around a single technician walking into the war-zone of a kitchen to face equipment they may never have seen before -and walking out with everyone smiling.
They’ve taken the bold move of developing their own, industry-leading, process solutions to this field-service operation. Looking at each step of what they do - and constantly trying to improve.
Starting more than 20 years ago, unhappy with the "this software is infinitely customisable and will do everything you need" - which they binned after 12 months and hundreds of hours of frustration - they’ve grown their own ERP system. These days that includes handheld devices for their technicians and their business development team, back-office suite covering all the way from CRM to invoicing and portals to allow a range of customers to monitor and track work and their performance.
So they have a challenge and an opportunity in their IT systems - and then they have the complex juggling which is inherent in field-service operations - engineers, components and technical solutions to their customers and their problems as quickly as possible.
On the one hand that might be more whizzy tools - on the other it starts to involve thorough examination of each step of that process - and the applications of Lean principles. Whilst Lean may be a given in manufacturing, it’s still practically unheard of in service industries - how do they embed 5S, Kanban, 9 Wastes and Gemba walks into their different activities?
And technical support for their field-team - looking after 3rd party equipment (1000+ manufacturers), and how to provide technical information and solutions out in the field? Cutting edge Augmented Reality - a project to provide a comprehensive database, comms link and visual information resource to their team where they need it. Having already moved the breadth of the department forward, their current BIT Manager DJ has now moved on to pastures new - so they’re looking for the next trail-blazer.
