Do you want to help shape the future of the world`s energy? Nuclear fusion, the process that powers the Sun, can play a big part in our carbon-free energy future. Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (the research arm of the UK Atomic Energy Authority), is one of the world`s leading fusion research laboratories. In addition, UKAEA is also growing a major fusion technology programme, focussing on major challenges facing future fusion power stations.

We have been developing several business units, aligned with some of the key technical challenges in delivering practical fusion power. These include RACE (robotics), materials research, tritium handling technology and other engineering and test capabilities.

We are seeking a Business Development Manager with the primary purpose of:

- Delivery of the business plan targets for commercial revenue

- Identifying and winning new business across UK and international markets

- Building internal support from technical, project and commercial staff

- Managing interfaces between customers and other functions within the organisation to provide service to new and developing customers

You will have a direct contribution to the growth of our business units. The consolidated activity is currently ~£10M per annum and the ambition is to triple this over the next 5 years.

Business Development Managers are `embedded` in, and support, UKAEA`s business units in developing and delivering on business plans, identifying, making proposals for and progressing new opportunities and other aspects of working with commercial and academic partners. In doing this, you will take direction from your business unit head, and will need to work closely with managers and technical experts in business units, key account management, the commercial team and communications and marketing.

You will have an important role in preparing the annual departmental business plans, working closely with Departmental managers as well as growing new business opportunities for the organisation. Knowledge skills and experience

Essential
- Higher National / Degree qualified in a relevant science or engineering discipline.

- Commercial business development experience - understands Profit & Loss, Value vs. Cost, Excellence vs. Fit for purpose, applied risk management.

- Networking coupled with experience working with people with different cultures/languages.

- Track record of sustained delivery of technology projects within a scientific research market and within constrained budget / timescales.

- Entrepreneur comfortable with ambiguity and risk.

- Delivery focussed, coupled with experience of working to tight/fixed deadlines.

Desirable
- Have a broad appreciation/understanding of the different systems and technologies that make up a Fusion experimental facility.

- Experience selling / delivery of technical services into a scientific market place.

Special requirements:
You will need the flexibility to travel internationally, sometimes at relatively short notice, to attend various marketing events, conferences and customer or collaborator locations.
