Specialist/Registered Biomedical Scientist, Virology
Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated Specialist / Registered Biomedical Scientists to join the team in this busy Teaching Hospital laboratory.
The Virology Department, part of the Microbiology Department, is based within the newly built Laboratory Medicine building at the Northern General Hospital and provides a full diagnostic virology service to the hospitals, GP’s and clinics within Sheffield and also referred work from other laboratories within the South Yorkshire Laboratory Network. We are a specialist Virology Reference centre and part of the UK Clinical Virology Network, processing in excess of 300,000 tests per annum. We are UKAS Accredited and HCPC approved for training. The department has a rapidly expanding molecular repertoire on an increasing variety of platforms. The Trust serves over 2,500 beds covering all specialties, as well as a large GP population.
The successful candidate will rotate through all sections of this busy department. A flexible approach to working is essential, the department runs shift pattern providing a Mon- Fri 8am-8pm service. Participation in the weekend and bank holiday service is expected of all staff. CPD and further training and education are actively encouraged.
For registered BMS, progression to Band 6 Specialist BMS is expected following successful completion of the IBMS Virology Specialist Diploma.
Please note the Laboratory operates Mon-Friday 8am-8pm (Shift system), Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday and Bank Holidays 9am-1pm. Participation in the working rosters is required of all staff
