Your New Role

A Not for Profit organisation is looking for a creative, collaborative and experienced Bid Writer to lead on quality assurance for all proposal submissions for fundraising for new research projects and major discretionary and capital gifts.
You will lead on all quality control of submissions and manage the submission pipeline for proposals. This is an excellent opportunity to join a small diverse organisation passionate about growing the quality and impact of our proposals which fund our work.
This is a full time position and we can offer flexibility in this role. We are seeking someone who shows initiative, is self-motivated and can work flexibly to meet tight deadlines.

Principal Responsibilities

You will be responsible for the quality assurance for our internal funding bids and proposals, driving up quality and impact. You will act as an expert adviser to the organisation, providing guidance and support to improve and strengthen our funding bids.
You will do this by:

• Quality-checking proposals and bids drafted by the research departments to funding partners (including corporates) prior to submission for strength of project design and adherence to funder requirements, editing text, re-formatting and suggesting improvements and modifications where needed.
• Highlighting issues or potential problems with draft bid applications, resolving them personally or flagging them with the appropriate research department as needed.
• Ensuring good institutional approaches to monitoring and evaluation (M&E), impact assessment, budgeting, contract templates and governance of grants.
• Providing technical knowledge of submission processes and proposal content for specialised bids including the development of project log-frames and applications to the UK Research Councils, EC Horizon 2020 scheme and similar funding sources.
• Preparing targeted for specific capital gifts or discretionary funds, working directly with the institute’s Director/Deputy Director as required.
• Oversee the monitoring of grants and submissions, looking for opportunities and potential challenges/gaps.
• Collaborating and drafting bids for large-scale, cross-institutional projects with mentorship from the Deputy Director.

Line Management

• You will have line management responsibility for one member of staff, and ensure they are fully supported and developed.

What You Need

Essential Skills

• You will have a broad knowledge of contemporary international affairs with a proven track record of producing informative and persuasive written proposals for policy-focused research projects.
• Meticulous attention to detail and excellent grasp of written English
• Previous experience of fundraising from private foundations, major donors and statutory sources and a deep understanding of how to tailor proposals to different audiences
• The capacity and willingness to work with multiple teams simultaneously
• Capable of working independently to deliver tasks to a high standard within set deadlines

Desirable Skills

• A relevant academic degree in Politics, International Relations, Economics or similar
• The ability to compile and check detailed project budgets
• Past fundraising experience for a similar organisation
