A Secondary Alternative Provision in York is seeking a Support Worker to start as soon as possible. The position involves working with students in the national park doing environmental conservation and outdoor activities. They are looking for individuals with expertise relating to outdoor pursuits, agriculture, mechanics, sports and fitness or environment to deliver land-based and adventure-based learning as part of a supportive team of teachers and support workers.

The students attending have complex needs, SEND and challenging behaviour and this alternative provision looks to find different ways to engage the students with education through outdoor pursuits in conjunction with National Nature Reserve projects.

Therefore, successful applicants will need to be available five days a week during term time between the hours of 8.30 and 4.30. Due to the nature of the role, the successful applicant will have a car with business insurance as it will be required to drive to and from the Nature Reserve with up to four students. This is a permanent role.

The role will include:
Establishing constructive relationships with vulnerable students
Following the positive behaviour plans for the students
Maintain a positive working environment with the students
Develop a clear understanding of the specific needs of the students
Recognising signs of distress in children, offering reassurance and de-escalating the situation to best of your ability
Assist the school in communicating with parent and carers using appropriate approach
Driving to and from several locations
Working outdoors doing actives such as fishing, hiking, gardening and many more

Key skills and experience needed:
Passion for the outdoors and happy to work outside for extended periods of time
Experience working within SEN Schools or with students presenting challenging behaviour
Car owner and able to get business insurance
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Commitment to and passion for working with vulnerable children
Experience working with vulnerable/ at-risk children or young adults
The ability to manage confrontation and challenging behaviour
Able to work with learners with various learning difficulties
Flexibility in approach to educating and supporting children
Team teach trained desired but not essential
