The Autism Advisor will provide an organisational lead in autism, particularly in relation to people with complex needs, i.e. those who have learning disabilities, challenging behaviour, forensic backgrounds, or mental health issues, in addition to their autism.
All elements of the role will be rooted in the context of Positive Behavioural Support and the values and behavioural technology associated with this approach.
The post will involve a lead role in delivering the commitments of the SHC Autism Strategy, linking closely with internal colleagues and a range of external stakeholders. The post-holder will also be responsible for delivering on the SHC Autism Training Framework.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Take a lead on development of good practice with regard to autism within the organisation, ensuring SHC has an up-to-date awareness of current good practice, research and developments in the field of autism.
- Develop a range of bespoke training materials in relation to autism, with a particular focus on people with autism and complex needs. This will include working with the Head of Training to develop accredited autism qualifications.
- Oversee the delivery of autism training throughout SHC. This will include delivering accredited training, being a specialist training resource, supporting Learning & Development teams to deliver autism training, and having an overall role to monitor the quality of autism training being delivered throughout the organisation.
- Provide autism-specific advice, information and guidance to operational colleagues in relation to the support of people with autism. This may include direct work with people with autism, as well as providing support and training to the staff teams which support them.
- Be involved in external promotion of the organisation particularly with regard to autism and complex needs. This will include organising SHC promotional events such as conferences and World Autism Awareness events, presenting at external conferences, being a member of external autism network groups, meeting with commissioners and other stakeholders.
- Be involved in autism-related research and support the development of a SHC bank of good practice examples and case studies. This will involve use of monitoring and evaluation tools, to evidence progress towards meeting people's outcomes; close work with Behaviours Support Advisors will be required.
- Carry out regular audits of SHC autism services and maintain a database of relevant information in relation to these services.
- Work closely with SHC colleagues in relation to the Positive Pathways programme. This may include delivering training and support to carers, and also supporting the development of this programme as required.
- Link with external agencies as appropriate to promote multi-disciplinary working.
Any other duties that are required:
The post holder will be required to work throughout the organisation on a flexible basis; this will require working away from the office base on a regular basis.
- A sound value base in respect of the rights of people with autism, particularly those who present with additional complex needs
- A commitment to Positive Behavioural Support
- Highly motivated to work directly with individuals with autism
- A Masters-level qualification in autism, or equivalent
- Qualification in behavioural approaches, e.g. ABA, Positive Behavioural Support
- A range of experience of developing training materials and presenting at public events
- Experience of multi-disciplinary working
- Experience in networking within autism circles
- At least 5 years working with people with autism and complex needs
- Experience in using Positive Behavioural Support
Skills and abilities
- Good communication skills, both verbally and in writing, including the ability to produce high quality reports
- Good computer skills, including confident use of Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to work as part of a team or on own initiative
- Ability to plan, prioritise, and manage own workload
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with a range of staff in a variety of teams and agencies
