About us

Border Force is a law enforcement command within the Home Office, responsible for managing the UK border control by enforcing immigration and customs regulations. We secure the border 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at the UK’s 140 seaports, airports, 200+ general aviation ports, postal depots and international rail network, but we also have two new Inland Pre-Clearance sites, one of which is in Milton Keynes. Here we carry out checks on consignments suspected of containing goods which may be undervalued, incorrectly described or counterfeit.

The role

This is an opportunity to train for a specialised role that helps to protect and enhance the UK economy. Working in a customs warehouse and using a wide range of approaches, from x-rays to paperwork checks, you will detect prohibited and restricted goods. There’s some essential manual handling such as lifting and moving items. You’ll be expected to maintain thorough records and occasionally to represent the department as a witness in court. Once trained you will work 12-hour shifts on a rota that covers 0700 to 1900, seven days per week.

About you

Previous experience is not essential as we offer full training lasting up to five weeks. We’re looking for people who are able to work well without supervision but who also thrive as part of a team. Flexible and creative, you’re good at problem-solving, acquiring new skills and knowledge, and dealing with change. Excellent communication skills are essential and you must hold a full manual driving licence. As a Border Force Officer you will be expected to demonstrate the highest possible standards of professionalism and adhere to our core values: Commitment, Discipline, Respect and Moral Courage.

The salary shown comprises the basic salary (£20,721) plus the annualised hours working allowance currently (20.48%) The total reward package is indicative only and subject to review. The salary and, if applicable allowances payable in this role will be confirmed upon a formal offer of employment being made. The formal offer will not be lower than the bottom of the advertised basic pay scale.
