Assistant House Manager

The House is open to visitors 364 days a year and this role will provide cover on a rota basis at weekends, bank holidays and out of hours access to the House for events. You'll also need to provide cover (on a rota basis) over the Christmas period.

What it's like to work here

The 70-strong team at this spectacular Victorian gothic house have ambitious plans for growth over the next few years. Tyntesfield’s excellent location just outside of Bristol means there is great scope to develop the visitor experience to this vast estate, and the team are encouraged to be forward thinking and creative in their approach. There is a strong sustainability focus at the property with working kitchen gardens that produce delicious produce for the café and restaurant.

What you'll be doing

Volunteer Line Management is a significant part of this post. Your leadership experience will be key as you'll have line management of approximately 400 volunteers, and you'll be training, developing and managing placements at Tyntesfield. You'll also provide supervision and support to the Hospitality and Front of House teams through Duty Managing.

You'll act as House Duty Manager alongside the House Visitor Experience Offer and will undertake multiple House Volunteer Daily Briefings each week, organising the day-to-day running of the House. The House will also be preparing for and starting a major Fire Alarm Replacement project whilst remaining open to visitors so this role will support the business as usual House opening. Even with the project disruption, you'll need to make sure there's always an engaging and involving visitor experience in the house for our visitors.

You'll be an excellent team player working alongside colleagues and volunteers, supporting other House Volunteer Line Managers by sharing your knowledge and experience of volunteering to enable them to be enthusiastic and able to effectively manage their volunteers. With the House Visitor Experience Officer, you will help foster a culture of good teamwork and a 'one team' approach to staff and volunteers.

As Assistant House Manager, you'll be taking responsibility for all access to the House and collection at Tyntesfield. You'll have a customer focused mentality and always ensure that high standards of customer care are maintained and improved on. You'll also be assisting with the organisation and presentation of events, helping them to run smoothly.

Who we're looking for

To deliver this role successfully you'll need to have;

  • A degree in Heritage Management, Conservation or equivalent experience of collections care in a historic context
  • Excellent people skills enabling strong relationships to be built quickly
  • Passionate and enthusiastic about the benefits of great volunteer involvement and a sound working knowledge of volunteering principles, trends and practices
  • Experience of working with volunteers and evidence of understanding the differences between staff and volunteers, particularly the legal framework, the approach to reward and recognition and different motivations
  • Flexible approach and positive attitude to change
  • Excellent customer service and communications skills
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety and emergency procedures
