Assistant Engineer

JOB PURPOSE

Contribute within the team to deliver a high quality, responsive and effective traffic management service for the Council. The Traffic Management team is responsible for the design and implementation of traffic signs and road markings, management and operation of permanent traffic signal installations, production of permanent and temporary traffic regulation orders and other minor traffic management works to improve vehicular and pedestrian flow within the county borough. These will form the majority of the duties for this post.

  • HNC in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent Level 4 qualification.
  • Significant experience of working in a traffic management service delivering efficient services.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • HNC in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent Level 4 qualification.

Desirable

  • Degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent Level 6 qualification.

SKILLS

Essential

  • Able to work effectively as part of a team and give guidance to others within the team on technical matters including some of a non-routine nature.
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to delivering a high quality of performance management and customer care within a cost effective and efficient environment.
  • Able to make technical decisions on a day-to-day basis.
  • Able to communicate effectively with and relate well to others within the workplace and with relevant staff in other parts of the Council and external organisations.
  • Ability to work under own initiative and motivated to achieve measurable personal and organisational success.
  • Able to meet deadlines and targets.
  • Ability to prioritise workload that will ensure that many challenging objectives are completed in a timely manner.

Desirable

  • Experience in the use of quality assurance type procedures.
  • Experience of participation in multi-disciplinary and multi organisational working groups.
  • Experience in providing advice to more senior members of staff.

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Significant experience of working in a traffic management service delivering efficient services.

Desirable

  • Experience of operating remote monitoring systems for permanent traffic signals.
  • Experience of delivering civil/ highway engineering services.

OTHER

Essential

  • Must be passionate about adherence to standards, value creativity and have an analytical approach to all matters.
  • Commitment to the provision of continual improvement.
  • Commitment to customer care.
  • Willing to work outside normal working hours when required and able to work outside Monday to Friday on rare and random occasions.
  • Ability to travel around the County Borough.
