We currently have a vacancy within Musselburgh Library for a Grade 6 postholder who should have a library background and will support the Library service in Musselburgh as well as support the busy customer services area. 

Currently Musselburgh Library is a standalone library centrally located in Musselburgh.  However, it is the intention to relocate Musselburgh Library into Brunton Hall, Musselburgh and this project is  included in East Lothian Council’s capital budget for 2020/21 and 2021/22. This will allow library staff and customer service staff to form one generic team managed by a Senior Customer Services Officer who in turn will report to an Area Librarian/Customer Service Officer who also has responsibility for the Libraries in Prestonpans, Port Seton and Longniddry and the Area office in Prestonpans.

The Brunton Hall is seen as the main Community building in Musselburgh and comprises of a Theatre, Rehearsal Suite, Halls (one of which has theatre seating for Films, Concerts and theatre events), a Bistro, meeting rooms and Council office accommodation.

This post will complement the existing Assistant Customer Services Officer whose background is in customer services and works within the Customer Services area of the Brunton Hall.

All staff within the existing customer services team in the Brunton Hall and the library staff within Musselburgh Library are being generically trained to provide an inclusive service and ensure within one team, staff can switch roles dependent on business need.

However, knowledge at a supervisory level does require a degree of specialism. The existing Assistant Customer Service Officer based in Brunton Hall has a vast knowledge of customer services and similar is needed on the library side.

In addition, we have just opened a community library within the new Primary School at Wallyford.  This will be a combined primary school library and  public library for Wallyford.  A Community School Librarian will be in charge of this library and the Assistant Customer Services Officer will be expected to work closely with the Community School Librarian at Wallyford and the School Librarian in Musselburgh Grammar to support reading development and learning in the Musselburgh/Wallyford area.

Relevant Qualifications

Educated to Higher level, NC or SVQ Level 2 in English and/or able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge, skills and competencies gained through relevant experience.

Will be required to undertake study to achieve Customer Service Professional Qualification Award and/orCertificate level qualification within 2 years of appointment to post.
