This is a hugely exciting time to join the Commercial team at the National Trust; our Food and Beverage business grows year on year and we’re investing in people, facilities and our offer at an unprecedented level. As part of this investment we’re expanding our team of Area Managers to make sure that our cafes and property-based teams have the right support to continue to grow to meet our visitors’ demand and generate more money to protect our special places forever, for everyone.

Area Managers play a vital role in our Food and Beverage business, working collaboratively with property teams to successfully deliver the National Commercial Plan.

The Hours: Full Time - 37.5 hours per week. The Salary: £40,071 per annumDuration: Permanent Vacancy

Interview Dates: We’ll be interviewing for this opportunity in Swindon on the 10th, 11th and 12th February. We’d like the successful candidates to join our team after 1st March.

Looking after a portfolio of properties you’ll work closely with key stakeholders including General Managers and Food & Beverage Managers to grow profitability and embed change. The Area Manager role is operationally focussed and supports an operation that welcomes visitors 363 days of the year. As such the Area Managers’ working pattern reflects this and includes working weekends, evenings and public holidays in response to business need.

What you’ll be doing

Reporting to the Head of Operational Delivery, you’ll;

  • Support your portfolio of properties in developing action plans to drive proactive solutions, delivering profit and sustainable growth

  • Work collaboratively with General Managers and Food & Beverage Managers, helping to drive and deliver property objectives

  • Work with financial business partners to influence and plan budgets

  • Use your expertise to change perceptions and ways of working to drive business performance

  • Ensure effective controls are in place so that your portfolio remains compliant, follows relevant legislation and adheres to internal processes and procedures

  • Work with internal stakeholders to support Food & Beverage recruitment, contribute to staff development plans and utilise internal opportunities to upskill property teams

  • Share best practice, learnings and offer support to ensure brilliant service is delivered every day

National & Regional travel is an intrinsic part of this role. A company car scheme is available to staff who drive a minimum of 10,000 business miles a year, but this is subject to the portfolio that you manage.

The Area Manager role provides support to our General Managers and on-property Food and Beverage teams but does not involve line management responsibility.

Who we’re looking for

To be successful in this role you’ll need to demonstrate:

  • Strong commercial acumen and demonstrable technical knowledge of the food and beverage business

  • Multi-unit operational management experience within a national organisation

  • Ability to assert and challenge in a supportive manner

  • Financial acumen regarding management and delivery of budgets

  • Proven track record of performance leadership, ability to analyse issues holistically, using judgement to arrive at effective solutions and implement performance improvements

  • Demonstrable consulting and coaching skills

  • Proven influencing skills whilst improving stakeholder engagement

  • Ability to deliver change within an evolving commercial business

  • Strong communication and diplomacy skills to navigate challenging conversations and influence change
