Animal Facility Assistant - Weekend Work

The Opportunity

  • This is the basic training period and introduction to Laboratory Animal Technologies (LAT) technical aid tasks. Working under close supervision, the Technical Assistant will receive training and work towards gaining competency in routine cage cleaning, supply of equipment, provide support to the animal technician group and data collection. Company Standards will be established and the individual will provide assistance in procedures as requested .

  • At this level no handling of animals will be required . In line with business needs and available opportunities the Technical Assistant will develop the skills and knowledge required to work in other facilities

How you will contribute to make a difference

  • Maintains a high standard of personal hygiene to help maintain barrier integrity.

  • Operates cage washing machinery / pressure washers / washing machines and maintains cage wash areas to the required standard.

  • Porter’s goods as required.

  • Maintains the flow of items into and out of the facility by maintaining close liaison with external service personnel.

  • Removes waste from empty cages or pens, changes empty cages/cleans pens and associated equipment.

  • Undertakes routine cleaning activities during the course of a study.

  • In areas with "in house" laundry facilities, makes sure that soiled garments are properly laundered before being returned to use.

  • Contributes to the cleaning and maintenance of the animal facility.

  • Reports any anomalies found to the Team Leader.

  • Prepares equipment and materials for study use.

  • Performs tasks according to Good Laboratory Practice and its impact on the work performed.

  • Reads, understands and complies with Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Reports any deviations from GLP/SOP to the Team Leader.

  • Complies with safety directives/Policies & Procedures, both written and verbal.

  • Adheres to HSE regulations

  • Reports potential safety hazards to Team Leader or Safety Supervisor.

  • Monitors their own training through the use of the 'Training Record System’ to ensure timely recording of training, competence and reassessment. Reports any discrepancies to their Team Leader and endorses their PTR at appropriate intervals.

  • Undertakes any other duties as required from time to time under the direction of the animal facility management team.

  • Develops a good working relationship with team members, local managers and trainers

  • Demonstrates flexibility and positive co-operation to meet business requirements through cross-training and flexible hours of working

  • Some previous work experience especially in a service role . A full driving licence would be an advantage

  • Level 1 Functional skills

  • Level 3 Basic Adult Literacy & numeracy or equivalent
