Advanced Nurse Practitioner Primary Care
An Advanced Nurse Practitioner front line service to patients registered with the Lerwick Health Centre, Shetland’s largest Health Centre with a practice population of approx 9,000, was introduced in March 2015.Following the successful promotion of 2 of the postholders we are seeking to further expand the ANP workforce. This is an exciting time to join the staff of the Lerwick Health Centre, where we are increasing our numbers of Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) posts to support the ongoing development of the range of patient services which we can provide eg provision of out of hours clinics in evenings and weekends, working in more remote locations to support increased access to services, as well as to enhance choice in relation to the range of healthcare professionals available for consultation. The post holders will work as part of a team of six ANPs, providing a front line service for general practice patients.Support and supervision is available from designated General Practitioners (GP’s) and the Advanced Nurse Practitioner (Practice Education).
Advanced Nurse Practitioners will see patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems. Based on patient history, clinical assessment and a comprehensive physical examination, utilising expert knowledge and clinical judgement, the ANP will be able to identify the potential diagnosis. The ANP will be able to initiate laboratory and radiological investigations, make referrals, prescribe and evaluate treatments appropriate to the clinical situation and needs of the patient. The ANP will also participate in regular supervision with the Lead ANP and designated GPs undertaking case based discussion/reviews. The ANP will be expected to undertake clinical audit, participate in educational meetings and be involved in activities to develop the services offered within Shetland.
As an experienced nurse with Registration on Part 1 of the NMC Register, you will also possess extensive post registration experience with either a Nurse Practitioner in General Practice Qualification or be expected to have completed / working towards a Masters degree in Advanced Practice which incorporates a programme of Advanced Clinical Examination Skills.Candidates are also expected to possess an Extended Independent (non medical) Prescribing qualification or be willing to undertake this programme of study. Evidence of ongoing professional development is essential.
