Activity Leader

The Activity Leader is responsible for the smooth and successful delivery of the activities programme (co-ordinated by the HSA). The role is pivotal to the promotion and delivery of the activity programme, ensuring students are motivated and all activities are run to a high standard.

Reports to:Head of Sports & Activities (HSA).

Location:16 centres across the UK.

Managing:International students.


  • Up to 42 hours per week, on average.
  • Evening and weekend work required.
  • Some weeks you may be required to work in excess of 48 hours. You will therefore be asked to 'opt out’ of the 48-hour Working Time Directive.

Contract and remuneration:

  • 4 week contract with a potential extension.
  • A deduction of £37.80 per week (£5.40 a day) will be deducted from your weekly pay for full board and accommodation.

Ardmore requirements for all employees

  • Eligible to live and work in the UK and 18 or over.
  • Have a suitable police check/ enhanced DBS(Ardmore can assist with this).
  • High level of professional conduct and smart appearance.
  • Commitment to safeguarding students at all times.
  • Follow all Ardmore Procedures and policies as outlined in the Staff Handbook.
  • Excellent communication skills and proficient in English language.

Role Specific Specification


  • Ability to lead fun and engaging activities (whether sports/ arts & crafts or alternative) for a group of students.
  • Ability to motivate and enjoy working with large groups of children/teenagers.
  • Previous experience working with children/teenagers and in a team.
  • Flexible approach to the working day and ability to 'think on your feet’.
  • Ability to create and sustain working relationships with children and young adults.
  • Outgoing personality and enthusiastic team player.
  • Ability to work in high pressure environment.


  • Previous summer school experience, ideally residential.
  • Hold a valid First Aid Certificate, Lifeguard or sports coaching qualification.
  • Have experience of working with students ages 9 - 17.

Job tasks:

Activities and Excursions

  • Plan, organise and implement a wide range of activities during morning, afternoon and evening activities as directed by the HSA.
  • Ensure activities are structured, engaging, accessible and enjoyable for all participants.
  • Be enthusiastic and motivated in promoting and delivering the weekly Ardmore Activity Programme.
  • Ensure students attend the set activities and attendance records are accurate.
  • Prepare and pack up each activity session ensuring all equipment is returned. Reporting any damaged items to the HSA .
  • Guide and organise students on excursions.
  • Assist in the opening and closing of the centre as directed by the Centre Director/HSA and accounting for the return of all equipment at the end of the course to the HSA.
  • Applicants holding specialist qualifications will be required to undertake duties such as pool duties/sports coaching and first aid provision.

Training and Induction

  • Complete Ardmore Online Training prior to centre arrival.
  • Attend Centre Induction.
  • Attend all staff briefings and workshops.
  • Attend and respond positively to appraisal from HSA.
  • Actively seek further training if needed.

Student Welfare

  • Maintain student behaviour, safety and welfare. Make sure that all students are involved in the various activities and excursions, paying special attention to the individual students.
  • Report to the HSA any students who appear unhappy, not joining in, misbehaving etc.
  • Carry out residential duties on a rota basis, including meal supervision, lights out duties, room checks and additional duties as required.
  • Perform Airport 'Meet & Greet’ duties if requested.
  • Maintain proper levels of student behaviour, safety and welfare and respond to emergencies at all times.
