Accountant & Mentor, 6-8 weeks @ MALAWI NGO supporting youth, women & children

Posted 20 February by Accounting for International Development Ended

This inspirational youth-led NGO aims to empower communities in Malawi who are active in rural developments by providing grassroot support to local communities. Founded in 2013 the org now works across the districts of Rumphi and Chitipa, with their target groups mainly women, young people and children. Their main projects include:

  • HIV/AIDS prevention
  • Keeping girls safe in school - championing sufficient sanitary facilities such as reusable pads and separate bathrooms. They also educate children, schools and families on the risks causing girls to drop out of school, such as early pregnancy
  • Organic farming and climate change awareness - through a poultry income generating scheme, village saving and loans scheme and promoting organic farming
  • Youth empowerment and vocational skills training
  • Child protection
  • Preventing HIV/AIDS transmissions from mother to child (PMTCT)

They need the support of a Volunteer accountant and you could be the first AfID volunteer supporting this organisation and as such you will start by reviewing their existing systems, procedures and controls and making and starting to implement your recommendations for best practice. They would like you to improve and provide training in basic finance management, to make suggestions for improvements or new policies and to develop their internal controls. They have considered a move to using an accounting software but agree that this may be better saved for a later assignment.
