A stream refers to an abstraction of a sequence of data or objects that can be retrieved when required. The characters in a stream can vary from numbers to even mouse clicks. Streams can be readable, writable or both forms. Streams are versatile and consume less memory and hence, data downloads are usually handled by streams.
