- First Aid and Handling
- Common Illness and Surgery
- Medication and Immunity
- Beyond Veterinary Treatment
Odd as it may sound the Veterinary Assistant Diploma Course begins by talking about people: those who bring pets/animals to a veterinary. It is important to understand the complex relationships between animals and people, so the 1st module explains the best ways to communicate with animal owners, both adult and child, as this is integral to understanding the ailment of the patient, as well as making it easier to empathise and help an owner through what can be a very stressful and emotional time.
Of course, fulfilling the role of a Veterinary Assistant involves the care and welfare of animals in a veterinary setting. The 2nd module covers basic animal health, how to care for pets when they are in the surgery and the legal stance that you need to be aware of when caring for pets as a professional. Here students will also learn about the routine examinations and procedures that they will often be asked to help with.
To understand illness, it is important to understand how the body functions normally. The 3rd module in the Veterinary Assistant Diploma Course teaches students the basic anatomy and physiology of mammals in general: covering various structures and systems in their functioning state, along with some of the common ways that they can become dysfunctional.
As a Veterinary Assistant you will come across animals of various genetic makeups and breeding. The 4th module provides students with an understanding of the areas of reproduction and genes, and how these affect the health and well-being of animals.
First aid, both for humans and animals, is something that we all hope never to use but should have a knowledge of, in case an emergency situation occurs. Module 5 of the Veterinary Assistant Course describes how to handle an emergency situation and provide first aid to an animal in need. Also covered here, is the correct way to handle animals in your care, and the importance of adapting to the patient's needs, temperament, and body condition.
The 6th module takes students further into the common problems, treatments and even surgery types that they may be involved in on a regular basis, whilst working as a Vet's Assistant. This provides students with a good idea of what every day working life could be like in the role.
Along with understanding the various procedures that animals may undergo, it is also important to understand the medications that may be prescribed and administered to a patient, along with having a good knowledge of how the immune system works. These are the topics of the 7th module in the Veterinary Assistant Diploma Course.
The final module of the course gives students a wider understanding of the role of a Veterinary Assistant, as it talks about the daily life in the job, the environments you could work in, the roles of others you will likely work alongside, a little about the law, how to prepare for the role, and some tips on how to go about gaining employment.
