The Teaching Assistant Course begins by giving students an overview of what they will learn in each module.

As most of the students of this course will be studying to find out if this something they would like to pursue as a career, the 1st module talks about various aspects of the role. This includes information on: the qualities needed, income expectations, duties and responsibilities, safe guarding, school politics, equality and more.

From the moment they are born, children are learning, with each of the 5 senses creating a neurological pathway with each new experience, which get stronger with repetition of the experience; forming memories. Module 2 of the Teaching Assistant Course talks about the theories put forward by influential psychologists about how children learn, before discussing the national curriculum, and developmental milestones that children should be reaching at certain ages.

An important area for education professionals to be aware of, are the symptoms of and specific learning adjustments required for children with special educational needs. The 3rd module talks through this, imparting knowledge on: ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism spectrum disorder, and attachment disorder.

Paramount to the role, is the ability to support the development of children under your care. Module 4 of the Teaching Assistant Course talks through the areas in which you will aid children, and ideas of how to go about each, as well as how to track progress through various forms of assessment. Linking back to the previous module, this module also discusses SEN and the how to support the development of children on the SEN register.

If you are employed as a general teaching assistant, you may find that some of your role actually takes place away from the children. Ranging from lesson preparation and creating wall display to attending administrative tasks, the 5th module of the course talks you through the additional duties you may be expected to fulfil, but may not necessarily be in the job description.

The final module talks students though applying, and attending an interview, for a Teaching Assistant position, before moving onto explain the various job roles within a school and what they mean. Also provided are a glossary of special needs and a list of common acronyms found in education.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
