Overview

Tai Chi Fundamentals is designed for learners who want to develop a structured understanding of Tai Chi as a traditional mind–body practice that supports balance, relaxation, coordination, and overall wellbeing. This course explores Tai Chi from a physical, philosophical, and mindfulness-based perspective, making it suitable for beginners and those seeking gentle movement practices.

The course introduces the origins and philosophy of Tai Chi, body alignment, breathing techniques, and the mind–body connection that underpins effective practice. Learners are guided through warm-up routines, foundational movements, and basic Tai Chi forms in a gradual and accessible way.

Throughout the course, Tai Chi is presented as a non-competitive, low-impact practice that encourages awareness, controlled movement, and mental focus. Emphasis is placed on safe participation, personal wellbeing, and mindful movement rather than physical performance or martial proficiency.

As learners progress, the course also explores how Tai Chi principles can be applied in daily life to support posture, relaxation, and stress management. This course does not provide medical, therapeutic, or martial arts certification. Instead, it offers foundational knowledge and practical awareness suitable for personal practice or further study.

Description

This Tai Chi Fundamentals course consists of six structured lesson groups, followed by an assessment, each designed to build understanding of Tai Chi principles and practice.

Lesson 1 introduces Tai Chi, focusing on course overview, benefits of Tai Chi, its historical background, philosophical foundations, and an overview of different Tai Chi styles and variations.

Lesson 2 explores the mind–body connection, covering proper body alignment and posture, breathing techniques used in Tai Chi, and mindfulness and relaxation principles that support effective practice.

Lesson 3 focuses on Tai Chi warm-up exercises, including gentle warm-up routines, stretching and mobility exercises, and introductory Qi Gong movements to prepare the body safely for practice.

Lesson 4 introduces basic Tai Chi movements, covering stances, weight shifting, hand and arm movements, stepping, and coordination. Learners develop awareness of balance and controlled movement.

Lesson 5 focuses on Tai Chi form practice, introducing a basic Tai Chi form such as a Yang Style 8-Form. Learners explore the form step by step and learn how individual movements combine into a smooth, flowing sequence.

Lesson 6 explores Tai Chi applications and continuation, covering the application of Tai Chi principles in daily life, introductory partner exercises presented for awareness only, and guidance on continuing Tai Chi practice within the UK.

Assessment includes a final exam to evaluate understanding of Tai Chi principles, safety awareness, mindfulness concepts, and foundational movement knowledge.
