The course is available to learners who are working within a school, particularly in the role of a Teaching Assistant, Classroom Assistant or Learning Support Assistant. It is a fully recognised qualifcation designed to provide learning support staff with the essential knowledge and skil to perform effectively in a variety of roles. It is a competence based qualification which requires students to be employed in a school setting or to have placement.

The course is designed for home study or distance learning and is comprised of comprehensive printed course notes presented in an A4 ring binder, together with course assignments and study guide. Tutor support and a student helpline facility are integral to the course, and students have a full 12 months in which to complete their studies. Actual study time will be of the order of 300 hours (incluing an in-school placement of a minimum of 50 hourse)

The course is divided up into 11 study units, each with one tutor marked assignment to be completed. Each assignment contains approx 8-10 written tasks to be completed which are then submitted to a subject tutor for marking. Some tasks require evidence of practical skills observed in the classroom by a supervising member of school staff. Where required assignments can be re-submitted after amendment in the event that the assessment standards are not full met on first submission.

The course consists of 11 units:

1 Child and young person development

This unit explores:

  • The main stages of child and young person development
  • The kinds of influences that affect children and young people’s development
  • The potential effects of transitions on children and young people’s development

2 Support learning activities

This unit explores:

  • How to support the teacher in planning learning activities
  • How to prepare for, support and evaluate learning activities
  • How to observe and report on learner participation and progress
  • How to evaluate own practice in relation to supporting literacy, numeracy and ICT

3 Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people

This unit explores:

  • Legislative guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people including e-safety
  • What to do when children or young people are ill or injured, including emergency procedures
  • How to respond to evidence or concerns that a child or young person has been abused, harmed or bullied

4 Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults

This unit explores:

  • How to interact with and respond to children and young people
  • How to interact with and respond to adults
  • How to communicate with children, young people and adults
  • Current legislation, policies and procedures for confidentiality and sharing information, data protection

5 Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people

This unit explores:

  • The importance of promoting equality and diversity in work with children and young people
  • The impact of prejudice and discrimination on children and young people
  • The inclusion and inclusive practices in work with children and young people

6 Help improve own and team practice in schools

This unit explores:

  • How to reflect and improve own practice
  • How to support the work of the team

7 Maintain and support relationships with children and young people

This unit explores:

  • How to communicate with children and young people
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with children and young people
  • Supporting relationships between children and young people and others in the setting

8 Support children and young people’s health and safety

This unit explores:

  • The legislative and policy framework for health and safety
  • How to recognise and manage risks to children and young people’s health, safety and security
  • How to support children and young people to assess and manage risk
  • How to respond to emergency situations

9 Support Children and Young People’s Positive Behaviour

This unit explores:

  • The policies and procedures of the setting for promoting children and young people’s positive behaviour
  • How to support positive behaviour
  • How to respond to inappropriate behaviour

10 Schools as organisations

This unit explores:

  • The different types of schools in the education sector
  • How schools are organised in terms of roles and responsibility
  • How schools uphold their aims and values
  • The laws and codes of practice that affect work in schools
  • The range and purpose of school policies and procedures
  • The wider context in which schools operate

11 Prepare and maintain learning environments

This unit explores:

  • How to prepare learning environments
  • How to prepare learning materials
  • How to monitor and maintain learning environments

Who is this course for?

The course aims to enable learners to understand the roles and responsibilities of those involved in supporting teaching and learning in schools, and provides an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to do this effectively and in a self-directed way. It prepares learners to support the Teacher and the delivery of curriculum within a school, as well as developing skills to help children and young people to develop self-esteem, independence and skills for learning. It seeks to further develop professional and technical skills and knowledge, and an understanding of the importance of positive relationships within a school.

Consequently it is ideally suited to support staff wishing to develop and gain recognition for their knowledge and skills in supporting teaching & learning.


There are no study pre-requirements as the course is intended for learners who have not studied this topic beforehand. Students will however require an in-school placement of a minimum of 50 hours, and must be supervised by a qualificed teacher willing to attest to a range of activities undertaken by the learner.

Career path

The qualification is designed for a range of learning support staff in schools wishing to formalise their knowledge and skill and operate as classroom or teaching assistant. It provides a stepping stone to level 3 study and to the requirements of sstaff wishing to apply for HLTA status.

Hi i have some classroom experience but not currently , can i still do this course ? How do i approach a school to get some experience ?


The practical experience in school needs to be in the present in order to be able to undertake activities which demonstrate the knowledge and skill required by the course assessments. Many schools welcome volunteer learning support staff and make placements available to people studying for a recognised qualification. Usually writing to a few local schools will lead to an invitation to discuss an offer of volunteering.

I do not have any prior experience in teaching / in a support role. Can I still apply? Do I have to volunteer in a school while pursuing this course.


Thank you for your query. No previous experience is required as the course study pack contains all of the information needed (apart from reseraching schoool policies for example). I am currently volunteering with a primary school and completed more than 100 hours. Will this count towards the 50 hours in-school placement?


You may count some of these hours but the important thing is that you are in a placement where you can gather evidence of practical skills which is likely to require 50 hours or more whilst you are completing the course.

The 50 hours is a guide - it should be sufficient hours over the duration of the course to provide the opportunities required to gather practical evidence of skills necessary..

The course is distance learning from printed study notes which are sent. The course has 11 study nits and each requires an assignment to be completed based on your understanding of each topic. Assignments require you to demonstrates practical skills in a setting so you will need a placement in school to complete the course. Once completed assignments can be emailed to your tutor who will provide marking and feedback.

Do I need to finf the placement in school before starting the course?


You can start the course and complete some of the work before commencing a placement but would need to have practical involvement in teaching and learning within a month or two of starting.

Support for the course lasts for 12 months, but could be extended for a second year on payment of a £60 administration fee if required. We have been running this particular qualification for six years.

What does study method mean?

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

What are CPD hours/points?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on, many of which can be completed online.

What is a ‘regulated qualification’?

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

What is an ‘endorsed’ course?

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body’s logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
