Overview
In simple words, sports psychologists are those people who study the relationship between the body and the mind with respect to athletic activities. They counsel and help athletes to enhance their performance or overcome any mental obstructions during their performance on the field. They also assist coaches to build winning teams, meet goals related to performance and make plans to meet these goals. They work not only with individual athletes but also with teams. Keeping in view the rising competition in the sporting scenario, there is a rising need for professionals in the field of Sports Psychology. In order to keep up with the pressure of performance, young as well as seasoned sports professionals need to be counselled from time to time. A person who is an expert in this field can provide the help required.
Sports Psychologists are employed by both Universities and professional teams. The work they do may be either full term or on a contract basis. The services of sports psychologists are also made use of by high schools and colleges as part of their training programme for future athletes. They help to build co-operative habits in teams and encourage them to work together.
