Description

Spills and leaks in the workplace can have serious consequences. They can cause harm to workers, other people and the environment. It is not just large spills that are a concern. Even small spills and leaks can cause pollution and be problematic for businesses.

This course does not provide information on dealing with every type of spill/leak, as each incident will differ depending on the business operations, locations and substances handled.

In this course you will gain a greater understanding of what spills are and why they can be dangerous. You will learn some of the legal requirements for storing, transporting and using hazardous substances and pollution prevention. You will also gain knowledge on employer and employee duties. You will also learn about some of the enforcement actions that duty holders could face for non-compliance with the law.

You will also look at the risks that are associated with storing, transporting and handling hazardous substances and some examples of measures to prevent spills and leaks during these activities.

You will also look at some case studies of spills that have impacted people’s lives, businesses and the environment. Then you will move onto learning about risk assessments, why they are important and how to use them to create a spill/pollution plan.

Finally, you will move onto exploring how you can manage and deal with spills, you will look at equipment relating to spills, such as PPE and spill kits, you will also learn about containing a spill or leak and some examples of the actions to take if it cannot be contained.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.
