  • Vulnerability and protection.

What does “safeguarding children” mean?

So what does safeguarding mean to those who use education, health and social care services? Safeguarding children means protecting children and young people’s health, their well-being and human rights, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. Safeguarding is fundamental to high-quality healthcare and social care for children and young people.

Safeguarding children and promoting their welfare includes:

  • Protecting children and young people from maltreatment or things that are bad for their health or development.
  • Making sure that children and young people grow up in circumstances that allow safe and effective care.

We help to safeguard children and young people by:

  • Using the information we receive (mainly when concerns are raised about abuse, harm or neglect) to look at the risks to people who use care services.
  • Referring concerns to local councils and/or the police for further investigation.
  • Carrying out inspections, where we talk to people who use services to help us identify safeguarding concerns.
  • Publishing our findings on safeguarding in our inspection reports.
  • Taking action if we find that care services don’t have suitable arrangements to keep people safe.
  • Working with partners such as the police, local councils, health agencies, other regulators and government departments.
  • Taking part in multi-agency children’s safeguarding inspections to get a picture of children’s and young people’s experiences and how well they are being safeguarded.

Why is online safeguarding children training essential?

All professionals working with children and young people across all sectors should complete appropriate safeguarding children training.

Safeguarding is protecting vulnerable adults or children from maltreatment, abuse or neglect and/or preventing harm to children’s health or development. It means making sure children and young people are supported to get proper access to health care and stay well, ensuring children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care, taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcomes. It is wrong if professionals do not treat vulnerable people with the same respect as other patients.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
