Our History

We are the world's leading body for governance professionals, with a long-standing tradition of excellence. The Institute was granted a Royal Charter in 1902 and has promoted effective and efficient governance and administration of commerce, industry, and public affairs for over a century. Our patron, King Charles III, continues to support our mission and activities.

We are the only qualifying body providing globally recognised chartered qualifications in governance.
