This course is delivered through eleven structured lectures followed by a final assessment.

Lecture 1 introduces the prison system, examining the role and responsibilities of a prison officer, the historical development of prisons, different prison types, and the importance of officers in maintaining safety and order.

Lecture 2 focuses on prison laws and ethics, covering the legal framework governing prisons, human rights considerations, ethical conduct, and maintaining professionalism when handling sensitive situations.

Lecture 3 explores prison security and safety, including identifying security risks, emergency and crisis management procedures, search protocols, and contraband awareness.

Lecture 4 examines inmate management, focusing on understanding diverse inmate needs, applying de-escalation techniques, resolving conflict, and supporting rehabilitation to reduce reoffending.

Lecture 5 develops communication skills, covering effective communication with inmates and colleagues, active listening, empathy, and assertive communication of rules and expectations.

Lecture 6 addresses mental health and well-being, including recognising mental health issues among inmates, supporting referrals to professionals, and promoting self-care and stress management for prison staff.

Lecture 7 focuses on rehabilitation and reintegration, exploring rehabilitation programme design, preparing inmates for release, and supporting post-release transitions to reduce recidivism.

Lecture 8 introduces awareness of use of force and restraint principles, covering proportionality, minimal harm approaches, reporting requirements, and post-incident review processes. This lecture is theoretical and awareness-based only.

Lecture 9 examines prison intelligence and information management, including gathering intelligence ethically, protecting sensitive information, and maintaining accurate records and reports.

Lecture 10 explores diversity and cultural sensitivity, focusing on respecting diversity, recognising cultural differences, and fostering inclusive and respectful prison environments.

Lecture 11 supports personal development and career advancement, covering goal setting, continuous professional development, and pathways toward leadership or specialist roles within justice-related sectors.

The final assessment evaluates learners’ understanding of prison service awareness, ethical practice, communication, safety principles, rehabilitation, and professional conduct.

This course is suitable for learners interested in criminal justice, public services, custodial awareness, rehabilitation work, community safety roles, or further study in criminology or corrections-related fields.

There are no formal entry requirements. An interest in justice, public service, or social care is beneficial. Learners should have basic English skills and access to a digital learning device.

Completion of this course may support progression into further study in criminal justice, criminology, public services, probation support, rehabilitation services, or related academic and vocational pathways. Operational prison roles require additional recruitment, training, vetting, and certification by relevant authorities.
