Overview

The Principles of Medication Administration in Schools aims to help you to become more effective in the process of assisting with the administration of medicines for children in an educational setting.

The Children and Families Act in 2014 introduced the legal duty for schools to support learners with medical conditions. Children with both physical and mental health conditions need to be supported appropriately to make sure that they make the most of, and enjoy, school life, reach their academic potential, progress and achieve, all whilst remaining healthy.

Description

Module 1 will look at the legislation and guidance that is in place in order to keep everyone involved in medication support safe. Module 2 will look at some of the medical conditions, such as asthma and diabetes that are common in school-age children and how these children can best be supported. Finally, Module 3 will look at specific issues involved with administering medications and medical care in schools, including the storage, administration, disposal, and dosage of medications. It will also look at best practice generally and with specific tasks.

This course will provide a sound background to medication use in schools, including assisting with specialist tasks such as giving insulin injections. However, it does not replace any specialist advice you may be given from specialist nurses, specialist training courses or being shown techniques by other health professionals who may work with the child. The course will, however, give you a great understanding of medical conditions, medications, the legal framework and guidance surrounding medication use in schools, plus equip schools to put effective systems in place to support individual children.

To be awarded the Certificate in Principles of Medication Administration in Schools learners are required to successfully complete all three modules.

Assessment

Learners are required to complete a tutor marked assignment at the end of each module. The assignment requires learners to use the knowledge they have gained to answer questions related to the subject area and show their understanding.

Upon successful completion of the 3 modules, learners will receive their Certificate in Principles of Medication Administration in Schools from the awarding organisation Quality Licence Scheme.

Certification

At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement from Quality Licence Scheme and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the components the learner has completed as part of the course).

The course has been endorsed under the Quality Licence Scheme. This means that NCC Home Learning has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet defined quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to a regulated qualification* but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills gained. The Learner Unit Summary may be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this subject. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at QLS Level 2 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of demand/complexity involved in successful completion by the learner.

The Quality Licence Scheme is part of the Skills and Education Group, a charitable organisation that unites education and skills-orientated organisations that share similar values and objectives. With more than 100 years of collective experience, the Skills and Education Group’s strategic partnerships create opportunities to inform, influence and represent the wider education and skills sector.

The Skills and Education Group’s knowledge and experience of working within the awarding sector enables them to work with training providers, through the Quality Licence Scheme, to help them develop high-quality courses and/or training programmes for the non-regulated market.

*Regulated qualification refers to those qualifications that are regulated by Ofqual / CCEA / Qualification Wales
